The last 29-1 that I saw for sale was when Lock Stock and Barrel had their annual big auction.

Rare Smith & Wesson S&W Model 29-1 .44 Magnum 8 3/8″ DA/SA Revolver 1962 | Lock, Stock & Barrel Auctions

They are now called Mt. Mcoy Auctions.

Get on the mailing list for their next auction.

That was rather inexpensive ($2575) for a 29-1 even though the "coke" grips are missing. Was that before or after buyer's premium and other fees?

Then there's this one that sold in August for $11,750 plus tax/shipping.

Cased Special Order S&W Model 29-1 Revolver with Factory Letter | Rock Island Auction

I think the expected price for a correct and excellent condition 29-1 6.5 or 8 3/8 with box would be in the $4k-$5k range.

Would it be safe to say that a dash 1 for most revolvers being made at that time would be rare? I know the it is also rare for the model 17 and that it is related to the right hand left hand threads of the ejection rod.

No buyers premium at LSB. They start every auction no reserve at a penny and let it run for 10 days. They let the market decide what it sells for. This one was sold last year, so pretty recent. It may have just been missed or sold on a bad week. Either way, someone got a great deal IMO

I rarely see -1s from any of the models from that period, which doesn't mean most of them are rare. There are some 70ish of the 29-1s known and I would call that rare, but quite a few of the 14-1s, 17-1s, 19-1s although I have no idea how many. The most rare, I believe, is the 28-1 of which I think there is only one known and it is in the hands of a Forum member.

I have a 14-1, a 19-1 and a 29-1 but the others have so far eluded me.

Yes, they really have a lot going on.

I just found this out. LSB still exists in Cody, WY but they are no longer affiilated with LSB in Simi Valley, CA, which is now, as you said, Mt. McCoy. I am actually from adjacent San Fernando Valley originally, not far from there. I was raised there and had never heard of a Mt. McCoy - turns out it's a mountain in the area - which is almost completely unknown by anybody else. LOL!

I have bought about a half dozen guns from them and they are really good people. Honest and fair, never an issue.

Jeff,
What about the 27-1's? Have you seen/documented many of them?

I have a 29-1, 19-1 and two 27-1's.

In regards to the cased special order 29-1 sold at RIA in August for $11,750 plus tax/shipping. This gun has a 5 inch barrel (1 of 5 known) cased with tools and factory letter documented. IMHO, not a bad price when Colt snake gun collectors are paying 20K plus, for a 1985, Colt Boa. (1,200 produced. 600 in 4" and 600 in 6") This might help explain, the RIA special order S&W 29-1. What are the chances of finding another documented lettered 5" 29-1 in this condition? 1 of 5.... and maybe a few more unidentified sleepers out there? Many S&W .357 Registered Magnums have sold in excess of the above price due to rarity as well. So for the .44 magnum collector... what else could be harder to find? Just my thoughts!
