Recently acquired this 29-2 serial S 270196 which I believe should be from the 1966-67 time frame for production.

My question is, would a 29-2 from this year have the small football cutout stocks? I thought the small cut was more associated with the early pre 29 guns.

My pre 29 has the large football cut as does my grandfather's .44 Magnum that he bought new in 57.

I'm pretty sure the stocks on my pre 29 are not original to the gun and I'm not sure either with this 29-2.

Any info or thoughts would be appreciated.

Your 29-2 shipped in November 1965. The stocks may be original to your revolver although the larger relieved area is more common. I have seen the smaller relieved area on stocks dating to 1959, but stocks did vary based on how the stocking machine was setup for a particular run. There is really no good way to know. I can say with certainty the larger relieved area is common on stocks of early 44 Magnums as I have quite a few made in the first few months of production, and they all have the larger relieved area.

Thank you Doc, and I really appreciate you giving me a shipping date.

I always value the knowledge you bring to this forum.

One other thing about these stocks, I can't tell for sure if these are Goncalo Alves or Walnut?

Tell me what you guys think?

Thank you. I was thinking Goncalo, but they are quite a bit darker than the set on my Pre 29 or any of my other sets of Goncalo stocks. I'm sure the age of them has darkened them plenty over the years.

And they have been on the gun for a very, very long time, I was a little surprised at how much gunk and grease/wax like film was under them on the frame.
