That's aftermarket porting done by Mag-Na-Port in Michigan.
It would have shipped with N frame "football" target stocks like the ones on the right:

Your S&W nickel 4" Model 29-2 was manufactured in 1980, and as s&wchad informed you, it would have shipped with football cutout GA checkered target stocks. I also think that the Mag-Na-Port was done after it was purchased by the owner. It's a nice revolver, and nickel adds a premium to the value. However, to many folks, the porting detracts from the value. As is, without its presentation case and tools, I'd value it at about $1200...with the proper stocks perhaps $1400.

case

In my area a presentation case will run $100 to $200, more if it has the tools. I've seen tools in a unopened plastic bag go for approx $40. Here the final price on a case will depend on condition. Length of cleaning rod will effect value, longer is more expensive. You can go to ebay and see what they are going for.

I agree, $150-$200. Condition of the case (the outside wood, brass hardware, and especially the blue flocking on the plastic or foam inserts) and tools determine the price. However, we have Forum members (e.g. jcelect) who will restore a presentation case for a fair price. I'm not sure that you can always recover the cost of the case if you sell, but to me it completes the set.
