Recently acquired a 29 no dash 4". Have been getting several pieces from his father's collection he inherited. I have never seen a "spacer" in any of the other no dash or pre 29's that I have. Anyone seen this before? Factory? Modified? Thanks for any input!

Chris

I've never seen a factory grip with such a spacer. I suspect that it is someone's modification of factory grips. I have no idea what purpose it would serve except decorative - possibly someone just liked the way it looks. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to perform the modification - just thin down the grips and make a spacer. Any idea what material the spacer is made of?

looks and feels like a heavy plastic material. I could see someone making that modification, does look kind of neat to me, but none of the others in his collection look "modified". That's what made me wonder. .

Are there pins coming out of the plastic piece that fit into the right panel there?

I'm wondering if it does serve a purpose; to make sure that both panels fit together perfectly?

Yes, there are three holes in spacer and both grips with three small pins. Takes a second to fit back together, but line up perfectly when assembled.

maybe the shooter wanted a slightly wider grip?

This is the obvious guess but if you study the photos, the stocks fit the frame properly, thus some wood must have been removed from the stocks to allow such a spacer to work, negating any change in the width of the grip.

It appears it was done simply for decoration and I think it does indeed look nice.

Edit: I just had a thought- perhaps it was a way to salvage a warped but otherwise nice set of stocks. Take a little wood off to true them back up and add the spacer.

The spacer is custom (nicely done) and not factory. Also, the stocks appear to be diamond targets made of walnut, but should be coke bottle stocks made of Goncalo alves.

Seems to me DB hit the nail on the head. The stocks were probably warped or otherwise not seamless requiring them to be trued up necessitating the plastic as a filler, rather than as a spacer.

I see a very good reason for it. N frame target stocks have a tendency to warp and that my friends is a mighty fancy fix and not all that hard to do. Wish I had thought of it.:):)

Man. I'm going to have to have a chat with you about a set of ropers I have that could maybe use this treatment at some point ;)

I use a different approach. I square the sides then glue a thin piece of veneer on and refit. It doesn't show and I won't tell anyone if you don't.:):)

My guess would be that the former owner was an Engineer. Just had to make a modification that made sense at least to him.
