I need some advice, and im kind of scared.
I am a 25 year old man currently in college looking to become a doctor. I do not own any firearms but would like to start owning guns. I know in California that you must complete the HSC, and I have yet to do that. Once I do that I already know what pistol I want to buy as my first pistol, A Glock 27. Once I buy or before I buy my first pistol I want to take the NRA safety classes and eventually get the instructor classes done. After that I want to apply for my CCW/CWP (Concealed Carry). Here is what I am scared of. I am a heart patient. I just got done with my second ope heart surgery and am recovering great, for the most part; I am left handed and have some nerve damage to my forearm and trigger finger, yeah I know trigger finger nerve damage, that will be fun...
Here is what I am scared of. I have fired firearms before, love them, dont fear them, respect them and know alot about them, and I desire to own them; so its not that. ..

I am afraid my second amendment right may be blocked due to I am a person who has a heart condition, and autoimmune disorders and to add to all of that I was told I have high functioning autism, ausperger's or something. I am afraid even just at the buying the firearm process they will deny me because I am a person who can become physically ill a any time and need medication at any time. I know Alcohol(i dont drink.... EVER) and prescription drugs and firearms is a bad combo and is illegal. Even with these shootings that have happened they said that they offenders had a type of autism. Am I at risk of being stripped of my right to bear arms due to something I was born with?

So what is to say that either the dealer at the gun store or the officer issuing the CWP/CCW wont deny me due to at any time I could be issued a prescription of Hydrocodone(Norcos) or even Hydromorphone (Dilaudid). That is a opiate, it is mind altering, you cant possess a gun and be under the influence just like you cant drive and be under the influence.

So Currently post surgery Ill be on Hydrophone till at least November then that is gone, so that is when Ill start th process of owning a firearm and so on.

What is going to protect my rights to not only own but carry a firearm and use it for what I need it for. I can be prescribed or need to take prescription medication at any time. I just need some help in knowing my rights. I do not know what to do. I want to own many firearms, I am very responsible, respectable and sane. I have never even gotten a ticket or been stopped by any type of police.

If you can tell me what to do or who I should contact it would be very helpful. I just want to be treated equally and fairly and not be discriminated against on my second amendment rights due to my medical conditions and for pain control drugs due to my rare disorders I have. Please help me. Would the ACLU be someone to talk to?

Thank You for your time sir/mam and have a wonderful day.

Never heard of someone being denied a permit because they have health conditions.

I believe I would seek legal advice from a lawyer in the state you hope to reside in at purchase time. What with the talk lately about denying owner ship of firearms to folks with a background of mental disorders[including PTSD]There is no telling what may be coming down the line. Nick

And the only question on the FFL dealing with drug use is about illegal drugs. You are not doing illegal drugs so that does not apply to you situation. If you were denied because of your medical condition, I would think if you were an NRA member they would love to hear about it and provide help at they very least by finding you a good lawyer with knowledge of firearms law. I personally wouldn't even worry about it except for you being a CA resident and having never seen their state permit application. First get a copy of that and check it. I don't believe high functioning ausperger's is considered a "mental illness" and if they did I would think the even though the AMA even though not pro gun would disagree.

Real sorry to hear about the medical issues.......

However, I can think of no reason that should have any impact on you buying or carrying a handgun.

Good Luck in California................

I have also never heard about medical conditions like you report stopping anyone from getting a ccw.
40 S&W can be a little snappy so you may profit from trying a 27 out before buying. A 9 like the 26 may be a better choice. With modern hollow points you probably will not have lost much in stopping power. See Gregg Ellifritz's article entitled " Handgun Stopping Power " available on line.
Good luck.

I should add that if you need meds that are mood altering don't carry while under the influence. Many states have laws voiding a persons carry permit if they are under the influence while carrying besides which it just makes good sense to not have your judgement and reaction time compromised.

California will only deny your request due to criminal or mental disordered that has been adjudicated. Due to HIPAA the state does not nor can they gain access to your medical records with out a direct order from a court. My father was a heart patient as well as a gun owner, one had no bearing on the other, I would make sure that the gun is on Roster and if not purchase it from a dealer that handles SSE before December 15th, as DROS has to be completed and submitted no later then December 31st.

Your medical records and history are completely private between you and your healthcare providers. Drugs prescribed by a licensed physician are not unlawful for you to possess and use.

The 2nd Amendment guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms, making no mention whatsoever about the state of health or lawful treatments.

Assuming you are a law-abiding legal resident having no disqualifying criminal convictions, outstanding arrest warrants, domestic violence restraining orders, court-ordered mental health commitments, or other disqualifying history there should be no impediment to you lawfully acquiring a firearm.

I cannot imagine that the state can require you to disclose your medical history in order to apply for a concealed carry permit. If the authorities attempt to do so that would make a very interesting case for the courts.

In California you need to get involved with calguns.net they are the biggest pro gun group/lobbiest organization in CA.

If you're going to have some nerve damage in your finger/hand, you DON'T want a Glock 27. In fact I would stay away from the smaller pistols as even the 9s can be rough when you're working thru an injury. For the rest of it, good luck. I doubt you'll have have any more problems than any average CA gun buyer will have.

I think you're fine and just need to go through the system like any other. Nerve damage...be careful on your choice. One of the sweetest pistol designs I've shot in a while was a full size Ruger SR9 and SR40. Seems very low recoil compared to others...like butta!
