If you get a chance, go to your local library and check out some books on military members who have received the Medal of Honor. As many have noted here, a number of service members who deserved one did not get it, yet politics and favoritism may have had some influence.

Around the time of the Civil War, the medals were of less significance and were often given out in large quantities. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the amount of medals awarded was greatly reduced.

In the books on the subject, you will learn the stories of some of the men who have been awarded one. It is humbling.

The US Post Office currently is selling the sheets of MOH stamps. The one that I purchased recently has the Korean War recipients listed. 145 received the Medal in that war, with more that two thirds killed in action. 6.8 million Americans served in the Korean War.

Unfortunately...

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people whose brave actions will go completely unrecognized. This is a pretty extreme case, though, where people vouch for someone and it gets ignored.
