I've got to cut one of these loose. I've had the 3" Lew Horton since it was almost new, shot it now and then and carried it a bit. Even dropped a hog with it at about 50 yards. It's accurate and hefty. The V-Comp is a 4" PC gun, and has the improved engineering features that the 3" doesn't. The 3" has a lot of cool factor, but I'm not sure it offers any functional advantages over the V-Comp, which has a better trigger, smoother action and it's very own almost space-age cool factor. Everyone revers the early 629s, but the later ones actually are improved. Whadaya think? Thanks for your thoughts.

if ur going to shoot are hunt keep the 629pc v-comp but i really like the 3 inch n frames

I'm a classic S&W fan, and I have one of the 3" 629s.

The V Comp has a space-age "ugly factor" in my opinion -- ugly unfluted cylinder, ugly barrel profile, ugly brake.

But I recognize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm not putting down anyone's choice of aesthetics. Aesthetics are purely subjective, and all I'm saying is the V-Comp doesn't work at all for me.

Tough call.

Whichever the market will bear in satisfaction within your time frame could be easily tested by putting them both up for sale....then keep the one that doesn't sell first....

I have a 629-1 with 3" bbl. Like "Model520fan" says, "It will be one of the last to go". It is hard to shoot, but is always the one that draws the most attention.

I figure that they would both go pretty quickly if I put them up for sale, but I was looking for a more rational basis for my decision to part with one. Style is a big factor, but so is function and longevity. Noah, I agree that taste is very personal. They are all good, like blondes, brunettes and redheads and we all have personal preferences.

Dump the Horton. Unless you are spending time backpacking in bear or wolf country. Heck I carry a riot shotgun in those areas. The Horton looks neat, but isn't the best shooter. If you are keeping just to look at it, keep the Horton. There is a reason there are so many minty and unfired short barrel bigbores.

Tough call. Shooting wide, for me the best 3" one is in 357. 44 requires 4" or more.
As for looks, I like the looks of both - very different and yet both gorgeous.

Sell the 3" Lew Horton

...to ME!!! :D ....I'm a sucker for the short N Frame's...I seem to really like a lot of the special runs that Lew Horton had produced. Good luck with your dilemma.

I'll probably trade the Horton to a friend for a Springfield TRP, and we'll both think we got the better end of the deal. Thanks all

Me too, but they are shooters!

Three-inch 629's are pretty much a dime a dozen. Lots of them around, and you can always find them for sale. They're very uncomfortable to shoot with heavy loads. I've had 3" 629, 657, 610, 625 (45Colt) and 625 (45acp). The only one I kept is the acp, which is a gun that makes sense. Four-inch barrels are much better for magnum calibers. Tell the truth, I'd sell both those 44's and get a 3" 45acp.

+1 I don't like the space age look of the performance center S&Ws. I would be embarrassed to be seen with one!! BUT, that is just my opinion, and you know what opinions are worth!!;)
