I just watched this on the TV news about 10 minutes ago. They had a feature about the plastic "Liberator" pistol. A guy in Ft Worth made one, it took him over 40 hours to to it, and it took some hand fitting at that. Anyway, he went with a news camera crew to an indoor range to fire it (the barrel was in .380). They set up several video cameras, including a high-speed one. It was fired remotely using a long cord. Results? The Liberator barrel (and parts of the frame) exploded completely. Exactly what I thought would happen.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that video on YouTube fairly quickly.

Even if they worked, I have difficulty imagining the average felon (assuming he had the computer skills) spending forty hours to make a weapon which, from the one I saw, seems to be the size of a toaster. But it makes great copy for the media, as did the diabolical 'plastic pistols which can pass through a metal detector' when the Glock was introduced.

I agree, why would they bother exerting themselves for 40 hours when they can buy one from their drug dealer, fellow gang member, or other criminals for $50?

A better option would be to make a black pipe shotgun if someone wanted a quick and simple weapon. Homedepot, Walmart and about an hour of your time.
