I purchased the 15-22 as a cheaper alternative to center fire rifles. We didn't quite go through the madness you guys did with the ammo supply recently, but then we don't have your restrictions either, I've purchased almost 4500 rounds of Norinco 7.62x39mm in the last month. You guys can't even get Norinco ammo. Our .22 supplies have been quite healthy, we get a lot of stuff from Serbia, Russia, Thailand and Europe. But I can shoot 300+ rounds of .22 for the same price as 30 rounds of 5.56mm. The cost of the rifle was also $800 compared to over $2500 for a base line 5.56mm AR. So yeah.
Our version of IDPA, South African Defensive Pistol has categories to cater for .22 and rimfire rifles, thankfully. So I used my 15-22 for it's first 3 gun - Defensive Multi Gun shoot yesterday.
The 15-22 has an Airsoft Crane stock, a CAA UPG-16 grip, an NC Star holo sight, a Magpul PTS forward grip, Magpul rear BUS and the Unity Tactical Fusion front sight setup, which allows placement of the irons, light and lasers as one needs. It is a great piece of kit, but rather overkill for the 15-22. I also have a Surefire 9P, running an upgraded 200+lumen drop in, on a remote switch. It also has a home brew Gopro mount.
The lessons learnt were 1) I forget these mags drop free. After using AK's, Galil's and LM's for so many years I'm used to grabbing the magazine to remove it 2) I have my face too far from the rear of the gun.
I was quite suprised on this stage, the .22 dropped a popper to activate a swinger. Because it was a rifle stage the steel was armour plate and heavy as all hell. But I popped it right on the top and the plate fell over. That's at 16 seconds, when I paused to wonder if I should shoot the plate, or shoot the peg holding the swinger up
15-22 on the range
It was a fun stage with the first target at 10m, then the rest of the paper and steel at 50m, with a mix of 3mini IDPA targets, a large IDPA target behind a no shoot, one falling plate, one swinging plate, the popper and the swinger activated by the popper all from "cover". Then move out of cover to the transition bin, transition to pistol, engage 3 standard IDPA targets on the move at almost 90 degrees (Watch your muzzle!) and on to the shotgun, holster the pistol and engage 9 plates at various distances.
Ammo used all day was bulk HV HP ammo, one stoppage. (Fail to fire). I think there might be something wrong with the extractor though, when clearing the rifle after the stages, it sometimes took a couple of works of the charging handle to get it to eject. (Which is why you rack more than once to clear a stoppage!) But during the strings of fire it didn't slow down except the once, the NC star kept it's zero nicely (headshots on 50m targets).
I'm really gonna enjoy running this little gun in these shoots.
