I admit I'm really impressed with that new Ruger SFAR in .308, but I really can't afford another AR at this time.

Friend asked why don't they just make a .308 upper for a regular AR-15?

Because the magazine well is too small in the lower.

So I thought: What would happen if they necked down a .50 Beowulf to hold a .308 bullet?

I think it would be a lot faster than a .300 Blackout.

...or is there already something similar out there?

That trick has already been done using the 450 Bushmaster as a starting point.

.30 Remington AR - Wikipedia

Big problem is getting these very short cases to run with heavy, long bullets. 30 Rem AR is a bit limited with 125gr bullets. Compared to 7.62x39 or 300 Blackout supersonic rounds, you get 250-300 fps more velocity but much reduced magazine capacity.

Appreciate the reply LVSteve, guess I'll just have to save up for a SFAR, I really want one of those things though.

...I may have to hold off until I hit about 130, but what's the hurry anyway. :)

30 AR was interesting but it has been dead for years. Remington has the Shmidas Touch lately.

OP, what you are asking for probably already exists, depending on what you are trying to achieve. 350 Legend for up close or 6.5 Grendel for long range. I's funny that you cite cost when wanting a new upper since the upper is usually more expensive than the lower.
