300 grain hard cast

OK to shoot 300 grain hard cast in a Super Blackhawk, with no excessive wear and tear??

I have a Super Blackhawk. It's a very strong gun. You should have no problem with any loads that meet industry standard pressure and OAL specs.

Any hard cast loads you prefer over another?

A 300 bullet shoots about 7'' higher benched at 25 yards in my SRH. Be sure to start on the low side. It kicks more than then a 240.

I don't use 300 gr bullets very often in my .44 mag's. 240 gr cast and jacketed is what I normally shoot. 300's often don't shoot to the sights, and are not needed unless you are talking moose or big bears. Knocking down steel rams way out yonder may be an exception. I did once use a 300 gr XTP out of a Ruger Redhawk to take a Maine moose, and it worked fine.


When I do shoot 300 gr cast, I like Win 296 powder, at about 1200 fps. It hits hard, and penetrates deep. 2400 is another good powder choice. Any higher velocity is not really going to work any better, and just be more of a handful to shoot.

All higher velocity does when you reach a certain point is create
more muzzle blast and recoil. In my SBH I have shot the 240 gr. Hornady XTP, I have some 300 gr. XTP but the box is still full.
I don't reload so it has to be a factory load for me.

Federal 300-Gr. Cast flat point is about all I have shot from my New Model
Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum. I bought it new in 2003 (17 years ago)
and although round count would be kinda low there is no apparent damage.
Elmer Keith sold it to me when he said: "I consider the new Super Blackhawk
the finest single action sixgun ever produced." Ruger developed
the New Model Super Blackhawk specifically to exploit the full potential of
the .44 Magnum cartridge.

I suspect that your wrist and the bottom of your trigger finger will cry "uncle" long before that Super Blackhawk will shooting full power 300 grain loads...
