Hello all, my question is fairly simple. I am thinking of jumping into the .308 waters. I have done some research and have narrowed my search down to two rifles.
1-The S&W M&P 10
or
2- The Ruger SR 762

I have been watching the forum on the S&W for sometime and they appear that you get a really good one, or they seem to issues, mainly barrels.
I don't want to drop a couple thousand on an iffy rifle.
One other under consideration is the DMPS GII. I'm not a big fan of DMPS, but I will go with it if it's the best buy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

@batmann,

I have not jumped into the AR10/MK110 waters, and really not certain if I want to. From what I have gleaned, the AR10/MK110 has not been standardized, and goodies to enhance your platform may not be interchangeable. In part, I think which way you lean depends upon your intended use. If you are looking for a rifle that goes beyond plinking at the local pit, I would suggest that you ask the pros at either the Army's AMU at Ft Benning, or the USMC's WTB at Quantico. When I built up my Remington 700 Varmint Special along the lines of an M40A1 as a 1000 yard gun, shooter's from the Corps' Rifle Team proved to be very helpful. These are the guns building the MK110s for service in "the sandbox".

I love my M&P10 and never had a problem with it that I didn't cause. The AR10 platform, while not standardized like the AR15, is a good general purpose rifle. It will do most anything you would want to do with a rifle, though it may be over kill on some things.

DMPS is ok but heavy. I'm not sure on the Ruger but I think it's even more proprietary than the S&W. I don't think any of them would be a bad buy but being that I own a S&W and this is a S&W forum, I lean to the S&W.

I do not have a 308 S&W nor the Ruger SR762, my 308 is a Seekins Precision and my 5.56 is a Ruger.
Like the SR762, my Ruger is a piston driven rifle. I love it. It's SO much easier to clean. I've cleaned a many DI rifles, so the piston thing carried a lot of weight in my decision on the 5.56. It will shoot 7/8-1.25" groups. Maybe that's important to you maybe not. I wish my Seekins was a piston rifle.
It took me a year and a half to decide on my 308.... painful.
Best of luck
Bob

I just pulled trigger on a AR-10 a few weeks ago. I did a lot of research on what's out there and was a bit torn between this one and that one. Finally I chose the new A series (takes the SR-25 P mags) Armalite. Figured they started the whole shebang and should know how to build one. Weather that was sound reasoning I don't know, But it works just fine with zero problems after a bit over three hundred rounds down range with what I feel is good accuracy. Good luck on your search!

No real experience with the Ruger or the S&W. I do own an Armalite AR-10t (their heavy barrel, target version), and it is a very accurate rifle. It will shoot solid 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with ammo it likes.

Internet aside, a factory semi auto rifle that is a consistent 1/2 inch performer is a keeper. Mine uses the old style Armilite mags, but newer versions can use the popular P mags. I am happy with mine.

In non-AR style rifles, the M1a and the PTR-91 (HK copy) are also good shooters.

If you are wanting compatibility and the ability to change things out, go with DPMS but not the GII. If you like the M&P as it is, it's a fine choice.

Of the two you suggest, I only have experience with the S&W M&P 10. As a hand loader, mine has only seen ammo I made. Either it took some time to "break in" or I did as I experienced some FTE's along the way. Now, at 935 rounds through her, they're a thing of the past. I trust this rifle and that's as good of a recommendation as a person can give I think. Sub MOA accuracy is yours for the taking if you feed it the ammo it likes (like any rifle). The Ruger may be just as good but I do not know. Good luck!

I am a M1A-NM fan...

I will confess to having a preference... I like wood and steel... am a big fan of the SA M1A-NM... to this day it is the one I would grab if I "Had to"... I will also confess I have never fired a S&W AR10... but I have played with Ruger, DPMS, Sig Sauer and Armalite 308's... and in the end I own a Sig716... and my opinion like all others is worth what you paid for it... M1A or Sig716 are my picks...
