I ran across an older S&W revolver and was wondering if you could help me with an ID. Nickel plated, small frame, 32 S&W Long. 6" pencil barrel. Serial number has six digits starting with a two. Old style stocks, serial number on the front strap. There is a knurled round piece where the front of the ejector rod locks. I must admit, these earlier revolvers are totally outside my very limited knowledge of things S&W.

That sounds like a .32 Hand Ejector from the mid- to late 'teens. When you say "old style stocks," that could include both square butt and round butt models. If it is round butt, it is probably a .32 Hand Ejector. If it is square butt (which it might well be, with the serial number on the front strap rather than the butt), it would probably be a .32 Regulation Police. If the wooden panels meet under the steel frame and are stamped with a 1917 patent date, that is a pretty good indicator for the Regulation Police identification. The RP models began in 1917 around serial number 260000.

Sounds like either a .32 Long Hand Ejector, if it has standard service grips, or a .32 Regulation Police, if the grips extend below the steel grip frame. It was probably shipped in the 1914-1917 period.

Thanks Guys. I quess it's the Regulation Police. Were these revolvers rollmarked with the S&W logo on the sideplate or under the cylinder release?

It's not up for sale, but may be soon. I don't know that it would be of
interest to a collector. Nickel wear on the frame (strap rash), and more on the cylinder. Stocks look very good. Plus, I don't believe I saw the trademark on either side (although it did not appear to be refinished).
I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

If the serial no. is on the frontstrap, it is a Regulation Police. The backstrap is rebated, rounded at bottom;the original stocks extend and enclose the bottom of the grip frame somewhat to earlier .22/.32 Target
guns.I have a 6"blue variation, all matching with maybe 80% finish.I cant manage the tiny rear notch and am considering having it redone to target
specs.I have several .32's,but this one and an early 50's Colt Police Positive Special are my favorites.
