The extent of fading and surface rust would make all the difference. Any photos? I am assuming the serial number begins with an "S"?
 
Don’t have any pictures to show, the rust is fine grain, light with no pitting that I could detect. The blueing is faded evenly on the frame letting its steel color influence the blue. It is a 28-2 with a S serial number. Rubber grips
 
The general rule of thumb for many of us is:
"Any N-Frame in good working order is worth $500."


Folks here have reported that they recently bought excellent condition M28s for $650, give or take a little.


So that would give you an idea of the lower and upper limits on this one. The 4" barrel version is popular now, so that is a plus, as is the earlier "S" prefix serial number.


The rubber grips are a negative. What will make or break this one is exactly how bad the rust is and if the internals have been compromised. It's hard to say much more without seeing it.
 
Where I shop the $500 (or a little less) number sounds about right for one as described. I bought this one (S281XXX) this spring for $600 also with wrong stocks although they were the Eagle pseudo "cokes" that retail for $199. This one now wears diamond magnas which should be correct for a 1966/67 gun as opposed to the non-diamonds on it for the picture. Maybe compare the condition of this one to yours for an idea of relative value. Good luck.

If you are going to buy it, you may want to use the rubber grips and rust as negotiating points. Has he put a price on it?
 
FYI - I recently paid $400 for a 6", 28-2. There was some pitting and some rust. Original Magna grips. I put $185 in for a refinish which came out really well. I'm not concerned of resale value, as I got what I wanted.

Bought a 28 -3 4 weeks ago... 95% blue with mild holster rub. Mechanics perfect with non target grips ( thin factory issue) for 497.00 on GB.... I think I did ok. I agree above any N frame is worth 500.00 if Mech good.... the grips are the real deal buster for me.... factory issue for me.

I bought a 98% or better 4” 28-2 with factory magna stocks which I believe are original to the gun. The serial number in stocks doesn’t match the gun but it is very close. I believe the 28’s didn’t get the attention the 27 did so matching the stocks wasn’t a priority. I paid $425. Amazing deal, I know. I wouldn’t take less than $600 for it now.

I like it, alot

Well happy to say I bought it, the 4” Highway Patrolman talked about above. It’s a honest wear gun maybe a little honest neglect showing too, but I cleaned it, oiled it, and swapped the Goodyear’s for some sb targets that had a nice wear patina.
Got it to the range today and I have to say this gun just “feels” good, real good. It’s solid as a rock, smooth but tight and the trigger pull is lite, linear, and breaks clean! I have some “prettier” Smith’s that in their defense haven’t been run in enough to hit the sweet spot, but this model 28 is there 😁
 
Thats good that you went and bought it, sounds to me like it is going to be a very fine shooter for you. I have 2 4 inch s- serial one 357 mag the other converted to 44 special long ago. They are great shooters and the dull finish encourages you to take em to the range and shoot them every time. Good luck and enjoy.

I like Pachs just fine. Even the looks are pleasing (I think) on the brawny 4" M28:

I have two 28-2 models, one w/ 6" bbl and one 4".
They're both fine revolvers, the 6" is superbly accurate, the 4" shoots better than I can too.
Mine both have some fair wear and tear, they are beautifully proportioned.
I'm glad I got them when I did.

I paid $530, and then ebayed a pair of nicely nicked up checkered targets to match the guns surface condition. If I were to sell tomorrow the rubber grips would go back on and I think it would sell close enough to my purchase price to make me happy. A bit of a moot point as I don’t see me selling it any time soon. I’m going to figure out how to post pics before I’m totally senial, I know that’s not real specific, but pics coming soon hopefully.
 


I have this 28-2 that I recently removed the pachmayr grips and replaced them with the original stocks that came on the gun when my brother purchased it new back in 1978. He told me that I am the only person who had ever shot this one when he gave it to me 4 years ago. This was my rabbit hunting pistol for years and years.

This one never will have a price tag on it. It will always remain in my family.
