According to the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson, should be 1971 ship date. I'm sure the real experts will be along with more info.

Hi Rogue686 - This was my father-in-laws detective pistol. My husband inherited it in 2003 when his dad passed. The cylinder seems to be sticking when opening and closing. Any idea if this is a flaw/damage or if it is normal for this gun?

I doubt it is a flaw or damage. Could be gunk (dried oil, lint, dirt) somewhere in the various mechanisms (cylinder release, the pin that locks the front of the ejector rod) that hold the cylinder in place or it ejector rod could be loose (partially unscrewed) and therefor lengthened.

Dhmd: Do two things on that handgun; open cylinder and screw the ejector rod in by turning to the left as it has left hand threads AND look under the extractor on the loading end of the cylinder for junk that shouldn't be there. If one or both of those checks don't cure the problem you should have a gunsmith look at the gun. ............ Big Cholla
