I have a mod 27-2 and mod 58 that I am setting up to reload for. The best I can measure the cyl throats I get .357 and .410.

Using .357 bullets and .410 bullets I am getting leading in the bbl.
I just bought some .358 and .411 to try in gas check form. Also got more .357 and .410 in gas check form. I want to load some of each to test.

Now that I have the gas checks on everything, how do I know which is going to be the right size for the re-order? I assume the gas check will not lead the bbl even if the bullets are undersized .001.

So what should I look for during the testing to determine the right size cast/GC bullet.

thanks

More than likely, the gas check by itself will do away with the leading situation, so the test may not provide much information on what size you actually need. I normally size at .359" and don't get any leading in a 27-2, 28-1, 66-2 or a pre 28.

Thanks Paul.

I sorta concluded the same thing, after I had bought both in Gas check form.

I did read more on the forum concerning cast bullet sizing, and think I have it figured out. I drove a soft lead slug thru the bbl, then checked the fit of this slug in the chambers. On both guns, the bullets did not drop thru, but could be pushed out with slight finger pressure on a wooden dowel.

Then I drove a lead slug thru the chambers and they came out at .3575 and .411. So I am going to load the .358 and .411 sized bullets. Like you said, the GC's should take care of the leading. At least if I go back to plain based cast bullets, I know which size to use.

Now to find a good stout defensive load for each of these.

That 27-2 will handle just about anything you want to feed it, so it's just a matter of what you're comfortable with. Since I have only used mild mannered loads in that 27-2, I may see what it'll do with something a little more potent. Maybe a good healthy dose of 2400 with a 358429. ;)

It's my first 8 3/8" barrel, so I need to see what kind of velocity increase I get over a 6" barrel.
