My opinion is that any variant of the word "soft" and the name .357 Magnum should never be used in the same sentence.

Every .357 Magnum load I have tried has just been harsh. Remington 158 and 125 grain SJHP, Hornady 158 gr XTP, Speer 125 and 158 grain Gold Dots. They are all hand smackers.

I'd rather shoot .44 Magnums for fun.

How 'bout .38 Special factory wadcutters.

Good shooting.

Blazer .357 Magnum rounds using the Aluminum cases. The lighter the bullet the softer the round feels.

There is also the weight of the gun to be taken into account. All the .357 rounds feel like I took a full swing with an aluminum bat into a steel I beam with the 340pd. Conversely, my 47+ oz 627, with or without compensator, feels like an absolute pussycat, even with the gnarliest nastiest rounds from Double Tap.

I'm beginning to wonder about my sanity every time I shoot .44 Magnums. And .357 Magnum is worse? Ay caramba! (to quote Bart Simpson).

Sir, while I'd agree that no factory .357 load is actually "soft," a couple of the "less bad" ones I've shot are Winchester White Box and MagTech.

FWIW, I find the .357's report more objectionable than its recoil. Doubling up on ear protection (earplugs and muffs together) is a big help.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Like Stiab said, the Winchester USA 110gr JHP is probably the softest. It is more like a 9mm+p than a 357 ballisticly. Some have chronographed it at 1200 fps. If I am not mistaken, the Border Patrol issued a 110gr 357 Mag load in the late 80s after they left the 38 T Load. It was going about 1200fps. They said it was still very effective.

Milder .357s include the GoldDot 135 grainers and Remington's 125 grain Golden Saber loads. Look up the velocities/energies on the manufacture's web sites and you can see they are considerably milder than most loads. I shoot the Golden Sabers in my 3 inch model 60 and find them MUCH more pleasant anything else I have tried.

Federal 158 gr Hydrashok is a "soft" manageable round for me.

I haven't tried Remington's Golden Saber but their other 125gr stuff was WAY too hot for me. It had a lot of muzzle blast too.

I carry the regular Remington 125 grain stuff. I want the hardest hitting ammo I can find in a given caliber. If I only have six on hand, I want as much damage out of each as possible.

The Federal Personal Defense (Reduced Recoil) and the 125 gr. Golden Sabers feel pretty mild to me.

According to my targets, my guns like 158 gr. boolits best. The heavier projectiles. regardless of who makes them, also seem to kick the hardest. Go figure. lol

I like the 135 gr. Gold Dots best, but I would lose no sleep over having the 125 gr. Remington Golden Sabers in my 686p.

I pretty much stick with Federal(American Eagle ) 158gr soft points for 357.

It's really a midrange load and is comfortable in my S&W 19 2.5"

I've put a few of those through a SP101 I just bought, and I thought they were pretty hot. But I don't have much experience with 357's.
