I got an email from Magtech today. As of July this year Magtech will sell:
.360 diameter 146 gr LRN bullets
This is the same bullet as in their standard .38 S&W round.

Now, in FIXED rounds:
Winchester Super-x and Fiocchi sell 145 gr LRN, Ten-X sells 150 gr 'hollow base flat point,' and Old West Scrounger sells 200 gr repros of .380/200.

If available, these bullets would make near perfect duplicates of original .38 S&W, .38 Colt New Police, and .38 Colt Super Police/.380-200.

Somewhere out there people are making the .360 bullets we are looking for. If we can just encourage them to sell them as components.

I've got a Lee six banger mold with lots of tiny lube grooves for alox lube. They drop out of the mold at .359 to .360,for use in my Webley or my old Lemon Sqeezer,I just don't size them, for use as regular .38 specials,I do.

Thanks for the heads-up. I got lucky and found several boxes a few years ago on Ebay when they still allowed such evil items, but my supply won't last forever. They're red and white box Remington .360 and probably date from the early '60s. If I recall, I was the only bidder and got them for next to nothing.

I was told these were from the 50s - I don't know enough about old ammo to say. I wish I had quite a bit more!

Western Bullet Co. in Missoula, MT has 3 bullets suitable for .38 S&W:

1. H&G #512 - 160 gr. Flat Point - sized .360 - I've not tried this one yet.

2. Lyman 358430 - 200 gr. blunt RN - this is close to the old .38 Super Police bullet. Although it's sized .358, it has such a large bearing surface that it works well in all my guns.

3. Lyman 35864 - 146 gr. RN - This is closest to the original 19th century bullet with a long nose and a short bearing surface, which maximizes case capacity for black powder. It's sized .358 and tumbles when fired through my S&W's. However, it's superb in my Colt Police Positive, which has much tighter groove diameter.

One of my favorite loads for this cartridge is very non-traditional. It's the 148 grain HBWC (I use Hornady's) loaded to a COAL of 1.11 inches (about half-way out of the case) over 2.5 grs. Bullseye in solid frame revolvers only. This load is very accurate because the deep hollow base expands to fill the rifling and it makes nice full-caliber holes in the target.
