I think you may be confusing the Model name with a cartridge, both of these guns are chambered for .38 Special. The Model is 38/44 signifying a .38 caliber gun on a .44 caliber (large) frame.
You are correct as well P&R Fan. My original response touched on that but I deleted that portion and stuck to the explanation of the model name.
Comparing the .38-44 cartridge to the 38/44 name can get somewhat confusing with periods, dashes and/or slashes, can't it?
