The 38 AMU was made for 1911's and 52's back in the 60's for target shooting. I have not fired any but I exepct it would be just like shooting normal 38 specials with 148's and 2.7 grns of bullseye.

Nice thread and good pictures! That's some rare and collectable stuff. Wasn't the .38 AMU actually for the S&W Model 52A?

I agree - I don't think the AMU was for the initial commercial version of the 52.
It was for the Army's Marksmanship Unit - hence the AMU and the pistols were specially made for that group.

Thanks for sharing - always wondered what the ammo looked like.

Thanks for the pictures. I know someone that just got a mini lathe and am wishing I'd bought a .38AMU 1911 barrel when I had a chance years ago.

Actually, the AMU is a close cousin of the African Emu. According to the late great gunwriter Elmer O'Connor, the .38 AMU was developed specifically for hunting this rare and beautiful creature, not seen by many.

The .38 AMU was also made by Federal and Winchester. I gave the box of Federal that I had to one of the Federal Reps at the last SHOT Show for their display at the main office, since they didn't have an example.

Hope this helps.

I think it was made originally (or at the same time as) those for the Colt Government Conversion for .38 AMU. I own one mag and one barrel that came through the Navy's Pistol Team, but I don't have the slide for it. :(
