It sounds like English isn't your native language. Hopefully you can translate my response. The .38 S&W cartridge is still produced by Winchester and Remington. Several other small companies also make it for cowboy action shooting.

Last time I bought them at a shop, they were over $20 a box of 50.

Ivan, is reloading an option in France (assuming it is France and not French Canada)? That might be easier than trying to have ammo shipped in.

Salut Ivan,
MKT a a raison, il est plus simple de recharger si tu le peux. Même si tu as une autorisation de 4 e catégorie il est plutôt difficile d'importer des cartouches de l'étranger. Tu peux recharger des 38 spécial raccourcies avec des ogives 38 wadcutter (elles permettent de compenser le fait que le 38 spécial est d'un calibre légèrement inférieur. Attention à la pression, surtout si l'arme est ancienne et du système top break.

Does Fiocchi make .38 S&W ammo? European makers might offer it cheaper. Reloading could better tailor a load to your particular gun.
What do you have, a Victory Model? .38/200?
What is this Category 4e in your licensing system?
Is it true that your current President, while minister of the interior, had self defense banned as a reason to own guns? Can you Frenchmen even protect yourselves now, or are things as bad for you as in the UK?

4eme categorie (4th category): defense and target firearms if I remember right. Basically revolvers in 32,38,357,44. Semi autos in 38 super, 40, 357Sig. Whatever is not 1st category.
Anything chambered for a caliber that was used by the military falls into the first category named "armes de guerre" loosely translated into "war guns" that includes 9mm, 45acp and even 32ACP.
It's a lot more complicated than that and I'm sure Breizh (Btw...Kenavo!) will correct me if I'm wrong. It's been a while since I've studied the french laws, thanks to the 2nd I'm not concerned anymore...

Daniel,you're right 4e category is defense and target firearm, and the first category "armes de guerre" (war weapons). The only other category for handgun is 8e category for desactivated handgun or ancient handgun. Semi-autos are in first category if the caliber is larger than 32 ACP, other are in 4e category.That the principal rules, but there is many exceptions !!! You can have an authorisation for 1st or 4th category only if you have been in a shooting range for six months, but in any case carrying a handgun is allowed. Now, even carrying an alarm pistol only able to fire blank cartridge is forbidden !
5e category is for rifle or shotgun used for hunting or target shooting, except if military caliber : 1st category. 22LR rifle is in 7e category (the only one that everyone can buy without any paper excepted identity card), except if automatic : 4e category.
For Ivan : don't touch to your gun!!! You only have to use shortened 38 sp case. (ne rechambre surtout pas ton arme, c'est les douilles de 38 sp qu'il faut raccourcir !!!

Erase the stamping 38 spl and write 38 S&W at the same place.
As I said twice, you only have to shorten 38 special case. To a length of 19,4 mm exactly.
