Hey all new to the forum. Been checking it out for a while. Well last weekend went to the range with the father in law. I brought my m&p 45 and he brought his 39-2. The M&P worked great. Same cannot be said about the 39-2.

He had numerous FTE. Empty cases stuck in barrel. I stripped the gun cleaned it took out the extractor and spring cleaned that. Problem still occurs when cycling rounds manually. After searching the forum and doing some research it looks like the extractor has been chipped and probably could use some new extractor spring and probably a recoil spring.

I am having problems locating replacement parts. I checked out links in the other post but most do not have any listing for the 39 and not the 39-2. Is there another model smith extractor that will work in the 39-2?

Sent an email to smith customer service and waiting a response.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I called Smith & Wesson a year ago about getting a replacement extractor for my 39-2. I was told they have them, but will only sell them to a gunsmith as they need to be fitted when replaced.

Thanks for the input.

setx: I Checked out Numrich and they have parts listed under the model 39 but not 39-2.

Will the model 39 short extractor they have listed work on the 39-2?

Model 39-2 Extractor

That was main change from -1 to dash -2 the extractor was changed to a
short style from a long style because of reports of breakage.
Same style at least was used in Model 52.

Simply replacing the extractor and springs does not always fix the problem. The shop where I bought my 39-2 (Gander Mtn) did just that under warranty and it did not solve the problem. It worked for 15 rounds or so then FTE all over again. I brought it back and they sent it to S&W and they "factory fitted" a new extractor. It has worked great ever since then. I didn't have to pay anything as Gander covered it, but I saw the invoice and as I recall it was around $77.

Thanks for the input.

I ordered the parts from Numrich and will let everyone know how it goes.

If you plan on doing it yourself...the pin that holds the extractor in place can only be drifted out in one direction. I can't remember which direction, but look closely and you can probably tell.

The one listed on Numrich's site did not specify the 39-2, however I ordered it any way just see which they sent, it was the 39-2. I talked with a local collector/smith of the 39-2 about changing it for me, he assured me that it did not need to be fitted. Took about 10 minutes, and now over 500 rounds without a single FTF or FTE.

Good luck and keep us posted.

From top to bottom. If you're not changing the pin, don't drift it all the way out.

I ordered the spring, pin and extractor. The extractor looked chipped so I didn't want to take a chance so I ordered everything.

Again thanks for all the input.

I will let you know how everything worked out once I get the parts and get it installed.

New member here. I'm trying to find some information on my 39-2 I just picked up from the father in law.

sn: A154XXX

any information on manufactures date would be greatly appreciated

I got the parts today from numrich. installed and hand cycling seems to function. We'll see after I get it out to the range.

Thanks again for all the assistance.

My 39-2 would hand cycle all day with no problems. Once we started shooting it, though, we had issues with FTE's, usually the last couple of rounds in the magazine, and it happened with three different magazines. So, it's at S&W right now, and I'm hoping when it gets back the issues will be resolved.
