I am thinking of purchasing a 39-2,
My major reservation is how available are parts, springs etc? with the 39-2s being out of production for so long.

Convince me to pick up a 39-2, It will be a shooter & an ocasional CCW
thanks.

Thanks,
I searched a couple of hours looking at threads tonight about the 39-2s
and may go and look at one in a day or so. It would be a nice addition and a classic, Kinda up there with the BHP & 1911
I originally was going to buy a BHP but price wise is awful high
for the money of a Hi-power I could get 2 or 3 39-2s and have a plethorea of parts and a real classic

Many the parts have carried forward to the 2nd and even 3rd gen pistols, and will interchange. I have a 39-2 that I replaced the aluminum recoil spring guide rod with a steel one from a 559, and I also upgraded the barrel bushing with a 2nd gen bushing.

You can find "parts kits" on GunBroker... parts aren't rare, but they are starting to dry up.

Buy the gun, enjoy it and get some parts that are subject to wear and tear or breakage while they're around... an extractor, barrel bushing, recoil spring guide rod are what readily comes to mind.

Thank you for the parts info,

Went by the local pawn/gs and looked at the 39-2 they had, finish was a little rough and price was 399.00 plus tax. No new 39-2 for me today

It may be more than you are willing to pay, and that's okay. That said, and not quite knowing your definition of "a little rough", the price doesn't seem way out of line to me. My 39-2 is in no way a little rough and has less than 200 rounds through it. I wouldn't let it go for less than $550. But I have the original, correctly number box, manual, waxed paper and 4 factory mags for it. For a shooter grade finish and no box with a single mag, $350-400 seems reasonable. To me. Only you can set the price you'd pay for a firearm.

Keep looking, and you'll find one you like that's in your budget.

I have another shop to check in a day or so, to see what may be available
The owner was not in in the Pawn shop I stopped in and I usually deal with him on firearms purchases. Finish was usual holster wear probably about 90%+.

C.S.,

Here is a model 39-2 I bought in a 2 gun deal on Saturday.
THE BOOK says it shipped in '79-'80. It's a little rougher than I like to buy, but I figure I have $300.00 in it with 3 mags. I striped and cleaned it and will take it to it's baptism (with me) on my next range trip.

For all it's honest wear, the trigger is pretty heavy.

Keep Lookin'!

When I bought my first 39 last year, I got a set of new springs for it from S&W. I also tried to order a new ejector from them, but they wouldn't sell it directly to me because they said it had to be fitted by a gunsmith.

well I have a few errands to handle this am Preparing in advance for hurricane Irene, sort of on the route is a LGS I do not get a chance to frequent during the summer months due to terrorists/tourists woops
maybe something will turn up.
jblack 58 nice to hear some parts are available from S&W.
PH-2 Nice looking 39 there the one I looked at yesterday was not as nice

Very interesting stocks, a type I've not seen before. Plastic? Marked with a manufacturer's name?

Gooney/WEG,

I thought plastic, also, until I pulled them for the clean-up - they're real "treewood". They are not marked but resemble the checkered Hogue offering on their website. I found some fair used ones on ebay (factory) but I'll just run these unless I run across a local S&W set. If the gun was prettier I'd be more motivated to find some nice originals, but this is as close to a "truck gun" as I'll buy.

PH-2. Those ARE interesting grips. Also interesting is the red plastic insert in the front sight. Does the rear sight have a white outline around the notch? Mine does, and I think it's original S&W work.

Concerning Model 39 parts. I don't know what S&W has in stock, but a newly purchased 39-2 had the magzine disconnector removed by a previous owner. I contacted S&W, and they had disconnectors and the spring in stock.

since were talking about parts, will 39-2s take 39 or 59 magazines? i own one and finding OE mags for these takes some luck

The 59 mags are double stack and will not work in a single stack 39.

The newer style 3rd gen magazines are sold on the S&W website as 39 Series and 59 Series mags, and shows they are backwards compatible all the way to the 1st generation M39 & M59.

I'm using one of the 10rd 59 Series in my 559 and it works fine.

Well it is not a 39-2 but I have 1 on layaway here is what came home with me today a 3914 w 2 mags and holster, no box or papers though.
I will pick the 39-2 up next month
