This photo's been floating around the net. Someone fitted a 649 with a Model 60 3" barrel and unfluted cylinder. I think it looks badass.

Even though it's a parts gun, S&W says they won't assemble one for you. Of course, they will never make a regular run; the three inch barrel runs counter to the 649's "pocket gun" shrouded hammer.

You could assemble a similar gun fairly easily, with an older no lock gun, and probably not have a lot more than what S&W would sell it for if they made it today. I've made up a couple 3" bodyguards. The non fluted cylinder would be the hardest part to find I imagine.

Smith has made some factory 3" bodyguards and centennials by the way.

I don’t know if the sales would be there to support the run. They seem to have already dropped the 2.5 inch full length extractor rod J frames that they talked about a year ago. I never even saw one for sale in a LGS. They just quietly removed them from the website a few months ago. Maybe they just can’t keep up with demand for standard model Airweights. Who knows. I do agree the three incher does look good though. There seems to be a underground following for most of the three inch revolvers. The three inch revolver thread is still a favorite of mine to search for and enjoy the pictures. At the time they were listed I would have been itching to buy a 2.5 inch 637 if they had done the no-ILS like the current 442/642 offerings. I think that would have been a very nice offering. Giving it the extra half inch might have been even better in many eyes, including my own.

That's sweet looking.

Elmer, would you mind sharing what parts and what procedures would be necessary to build something like this? I heard of factory 3" bodyguards and thought one would look awesome. I was thinking last night what might be involved in converting one to .22 or .22mag. Maybe even having the top strap milled down and out for the installation of adjustable sights? I don't need S&W to make it if I can do it myself or find someone to build it for me.

a 3" 649 10shot .22 or 8 shot .22mag with adjustable sights would be a sweet shooter for sure. I think I'm in the minority here from reading old posts but I actually like the looks of the hump back over the look of the centennials.
