I have been thinking about carrying a gun when riding. I have several revolvers and several 3rd Generation S&Ws. I think I would prefer to carry a SA when on horseback to reduce the chance of a 2nd shot being fired if the horse decided spook (I am working on that but I would always want to be safe). I have a nice 3rd generation 9mm and I was wondering if it was possible to convert it to be SA only? I expect I would have to have the hammer modified and I am not sure if that would be very practical - or what other problems would be generated. Has anyone ever thought about this or tried it?

I do not understand how this conversion would help with your concern. Sounds like you would be better going to DAO, which can be done.

I had my 5906 converted to DAO by a local gunsmith and I like it a great deal. I also have a 6906 slide which I use with the 5906 frame. The DAO trigger pull on mine is a little heavy but manageable and completely reliable.

SA advange

I believe a SA is safer since if you fire off horseback and the horse bucks/spooks if your finger is on the trigger (which it probably will be since you just fired) you could fire a second shot involuntarily. Whereas with SA you have to cock the hammer each time which would most likely preclude a involuntary second shot. DAO may offer some advantage with heavier pull but I would still think SA is safer for horseback. No matter how well trained the horse and rider. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not sure you understand "single action" the way the rest of us do. True, with a single-action revolver you must cock the hammer for each round fired. However, a single-action pistol recocks itself after each shot is fired. With double-action, pulling the trigger cocks the pistol just as it does with a revolver. With a single-action pistol the trigger doesn't cock the hammer, the rear movement of the slide does. A traditional double-action pistol is in single-action mode after the first round is fired.

Or, I am just really not understanding your question.

Okay

Thanks, Got that clearer now. But could the hammer be modified to avoid being captured by the slide when it recoils. I am guessing the answer is no from the responses here - I guess it was kind of a dumb idea anyhow. Probably better off with a revolver that is SA.

I have a Security Six that is in fair shape that I could probably use.

I believe you can modify a double action revolver to SA pretty easy since not so sure it would be as easy as with the revolver.

You should just buy a SA revolver as others have suggested if that is your concern. But I have a better idea.
Take your horse shooting! I'm sure he/she would love it and it would give you a chance to see how it reacts to gunfire. Just don't use the lane next to me, I don't think I could stand the smell. :D

Another vote for the traditional (Colt SAA type) single-action revolver - no other trigger system is as 'second shot startle' proof as that action. If the requirement to have an empty chamber under the hammer is bothersome, the 'New Model' Rugers are as rugged as a revolver can be and are safe when fully loaded. Also, the guns are designed to be used single action, unlike a conversion of some sort, and the ergonomics are proper for rapid manipulation under stress. Go to a cowboy action match to get an idea of just how fast and accurate these things can be in practiced hands.
