Morning Guys, need some help, just got a very nice 3rd model 44 Russian dated 1874, in the 48,xxx s/n range. As always, I disassemble all my guns to inspect and clean but can't get the little "tab" under the top strap that keep the cylinder from backing out to come out of the slot it's in .... top screw is out, but wont move.. any tricks?
Thanks in advance

It is a plate that can be seen if you look up under the top latch. The retaining screw is on the top frame and I assume you removed it, so either corrosion or dried oil and dirt have jammed the plate. I would soak the frame in the standard kerosene and acetone for a couple days. Using a small wood dowel, place it on the tab and tap it with a small hammer. If it is freed up, it will move, but if not, soak it some more and it should slide rearward so you can remove it.

Thanks Gary, took whole gun apart to clean but couldn't get that retaining tab to move. took the latch apart so I did see it was slotted unto the top strap. Even tried pushing the cylinder up against the tab and striking the other side with plastic "Little" hammer but no good. will try some penetrating oil next. Thanks, just wanted to make sure no hidden screws held it. Can't find a good breakdown anywhere.

You might try fashioning a small oak or maple wedge. If the cylinder is still in the barrel assembly, you can take a small wood wedge and place it against the cylinder and tab and tap it forward and see if that breaks it free. Here are the details of the parts on the top frame.

Well Gary, I did a little tapping and it broke in 3 pieces, would have happen anyway. I can machine another one unless someone out there has one to sell. Like they say, it happens! Is there a good source for old parts for S&W?

I believe there is some value in long term soaking to loosen up parts, but it is what it is. There is little likelihood that anyone has this part, and if you can make one with not much effort, I would go ahead and do so.

Did you notice the condition of the slots in the top strap after the parts were removed?

I will look at it closer tomorrow but will more than likely mill one myself. Got it out ( the back 2/3 anyway) and it was dry varnish gluing it place it was not going to move to get the cylinder out, not patient enough for a 30 day soak. May buy one of the Uberti parts and fit it to my gun ??? Worth the effort, gun is mint mechanically, and about 40% blue still, and it shoots better than me. Oh Well such is the life of a man that has to take everything apart to see how it works. thanks Gary.

Well Gary, took most of the day but made one. Lot of unseen angles to deal with, but work and looks like original. thanks for the help.
