Is S&W making and unported comp (I have a lead and jacketed bullet comp) for the 4" Model 500? I love the gun, but the muzzle blast is incredible with the ported comp.
The whole purpose of a compensator is to redirect the escaping gasses behind the bullet upward so that barrel climb will be reduced. So the compensator MUST have ports for this to work. You can't have a compensator and not have ports. A drawback to a compensator is that the muzzle blast will seem greater and louder because the escaping gasses are now allowed to "vent". What you are experiencing is normal.
S&W makes two styles of compensators for the 500. One to use with lead bullets and one to use with jacketed bullets. My guess is the compensator for lead bullets was designed to minimize lead buildup and thus easier to clean.
But to answer your question, No. A compensator with no ports does not exist.
Unless you mean is S&W making a model with no compensator.
That would make more sense although the drawback would be a great increase in muzzle flip. Why don't you try a milder load instead ?
Thanks for the replies. I do understand the purpose of the ported compensator. The 4" model does not have an option without the compensator and I simply want an inset that is not ported. I am loading this back to around 1100 fps with a 400 grain WFN hard cast bullet. Recoil is not a problem, but noise still is excessive. I bought the 4" model for its portability and it would be great if it were not ported.
500 Magnum Nut modified a .460 insert without comp ports to fit his 500 S&W..
It used to be posted at this forum before the changeover but is still in the FAQs at the "Other S&W Forum"..
There's pics & instructions on how he modified it there too.
I won't even try an post a link..

I called S&W Yesterday with intention of purchasing solid comp for 460 and I was told that there are only 2 types they carry anymore. One is fully ported and second with only 4 90 degre equaly spaced holes on the front end. Looking at your pictures I do not see those holes. Is it possible that the type you ordered has being discontinued? I ordered the later one with the hope that it is long enough to cut the part with holes off.
It's possible. If it has been discontinued, it would be unfortunate. I bought these guns in 2003 when they came out and did some experimenting, so the comp was changed because of the muzzle blast. The recoil is nearly the same but sounds like a 44 mag. You could remove the comp from your gun, then shoot it, it won't hurt a thing, except save your ears.
