40 CAL LOADS

I couldn't find any on Hodgdon.com; had to email someone there who responded. I was using another powder. They told me the cast 40s can be touchy for overloads.

I don't care for the round myself, although lots of people love it.

I don't think I have any data for it, but I do have some for a 180 gr. jacketed bullet using SR4756. You might try one of the reloading forums, hopefully someone has worked something up.

Hodgdon has studiously avoided furnishing any data for lead bullets in 40 S&W.
I checked an IMR 2000 guide and it also did not have any data for lead bullets.

Lead bullets in the 40S&W can be a bad thing. It depends on the firearm and the knowledge of the handloader. Personally, I have had a KB in the 40S&W using Clays powder and 180gr LTC, so, that "ain't" gonna happen again!

I use SR4756 for all of my 40S&W loads now. No lead at this time but I do use the 180gr weight of bullet. I use a maximum load and in my G22 I get right at 1000fps.

I searched in a couple of older Hodgdon manuals and they only list loads for WST and WSF.

If it were me, and you're not, I would reduce the load by 1gr, make the OAL the same, use a firm taper crimp, load about 20 and get the chronograph out, along with a target.

That's just me though, you do as you feel is safe!

There is no reason for this really. Lead bullets run fine in most 40s, Glocks & current USP being an exception. Lead is all I shoot out of my 4006, runs great. I prefer medium burners like Unqiue & WSF, even Lognshot. THe problem I think is guys using uberfast powders, like Clays & TG in the 40 regardless of bullet style. I won't laod anymore Clays or TG after trying 1# each. The small volumn of TG makes it suspect & the extremely narrow load range of Clays, only suitable for very low vel target loads. A better powder for the 45acp than high pressur e40s IMO.
