Bought some federal champion ammo in 40 s+w off of gunbroker last week. Got it in the mail today and looked through every box. Why, I don't know. In one box I found 3 rounds that the bullet was seated deeper in the cartridge than the rest. In those three rounds, it was deeper by probably the thickness of a nickel. Seems that would create a pressure problem, they're probably unsafe to shoot. Am I right? Thanks.

Call Federal and let them know, they will want the lot # and where they were purchased. In all likelihood they will send you a couple of boxes in the mail for your trouble. They did it for me when I got a bad batch of Automatch .22LR Good Luck TonyR

Federal Champion 40S&W and 9mm

I have had a different problem with this ammo. The ammo is coming apart before it hits the target. It appears that part of the jacket comes off before the round leaves the barrel. I am practicing at close range and the target will have small fragment holes and spots where other fragments hit and left a gray mark. Sometimes a metal sliver or two will stick to the target. Also, a few rounds appear to have hit sideways.

I am convinced it is the ammunition because both of my M&P's as well as my Ruger P89 have had incidents where this happened. It only happens with Federal Champion. I have a number of boxes of each caliber. While it was bought as range ammo only, I wonder if it could be harming my barrels. Any ideas?

Thanks, Hawkeye10

Wanting to be cautious, I have been using other ammo. I don't want to take chances with the pistols or the pistol shooter.

I took TONYR's advice and emailed Federal. As directed, samples of the 9mm and 40S&W were shipped yesterday by UPS. An explanation is hoped for as much as replacement ammunition. They are a reputable company so things will work out.

Out of a 50 round box of American Eagle 45 ball I recently bought, four were seated noticeably deeper.

40 champion

I shot some similiar ammo that the jackets separated. It was a cheap no specfic name from sportsmans guide. They were probably plated not jacketed. like shooting shot loads. sent them bck 4-boxes with the little
pieces of scrapnel,exchaged for blazers

Final? Outcome of Federal Champion Problem

I took TONYR's advice and emailed Federal. As directed, samples of the 9mm and 40S&W were shipped yesterday by UPS. An explanation is hoped for as much as replacement ammunition. They are a reputable company so things will work out.

Sorry I took so long to report the final outcome of the correspondence with Federal. After a few weeks, I received an apparent form letter and a check that covered the ammo and UPS charges. No mention was made of the other 15+ boxes of ammo I had told them I had. Finally, I emailed again and ask if the other ammo was safe and could be used without damaging my firearms. The response was it was safe and would cause no damage. I still am leary about it, but; I will take it to the range a few boxes at a time. I can't afford to dump it.
