I can't get my .40 to feed a round from the magazine either by hitting the slide release or pulling back slide and letting it go. The bullet noses up and gets stuck every time. It does seem like the magazine is hanging down a little bit- it doesn't appear to seat all the way with the catch. What should I do? Call S&W?

Is this (not appearing to seat properly) only when you insert the mag with the slide Closed, or does it also appear to not seat when you insert the mag with the slide open (locked back)?

Is yours a Shield? If so, the new mags are VERY tight and need a firm 'slam' to seat properly, if the slide is closed. They usually seat very easy when the slide is open.

As for the round not going completely into battery... Yup... If the mag is not fully seated, the slide may not properly pick up the round and slide it completely into battery.
You probably know NOT to ride the slide when racking the round. Not letting it close on its own often results in the round hanging.

When seating the mag (at home without hearing protection, not on the range :)), you should be able to hear it Click in. You can check to ensure it's completely seated and locked by pulling down on the mag.

It's a slide stop, NOT slide release, so ya that would cause rounds to get hung up... Properly sling shotting the slide should allow it to go into battery without any issues.

M&P 40 not going into battery

I had the same issue with my M&P 40 It did not happen every round but 1-2 times per magazine. It happened with all of my mags so I knew it was not a magazine issue. I also found that if I was shooting a lot at a time (50-100+ rounds) that the issue seemed to go away after about 40 +/- rounds. Weird???

Finally after searching the internet and not finding any solution (but there were other similar reported issues) I contacted S&W and they said to send it in. The return / repair process was frustrating and very long but it did get a fix.
They told me that the extractor was replaced and that the issue was corrected. I was surprised and questioned the extractor being the cause but they said it was now fixed.

I finally got my M&P back from S&W (it took almost 3 months) and sure enough, no more issues. I have fired a few hundred rounds (400-450) through it since and have had zero issues.

Although I was not happy with the process and time involved, S&W did correct the issue and it was covered under their warranty. I also have a full size M&P 9mm as well as 2 Shield 9mm and this issue has not occurred in any of them. The full size 9mm is my IDPA gun and I am VERY happy with it.

I hope this helps shed some light and good luck.

Yes it's a shield. And all three mags have the issue. Doesn't matter if I slingshot slide or hit the slide stop, rounds jam up without going into chamber. Gonna call s&w.

Field strip it and re-center the recoil spring assembly.

If that doesnt work, take it down again and photograph the extractor 'tooth' from the bottom and post the pic here.

In the 2nd pic, it looks as though the round is hung on the extractor. Is it just me?
Checked in slow motion with a snap cap and the rim end of the cartridge seems to clear the extractor by the nature of the cant in the mag follower.
