gentlemen, what's a good powder for 180 gdhp for a s/d midrange load ? will be used in a compact 3.5 inch barrel.

Longshot or SR4756 are both good choices. Higher velocities with less pressure. Check out the Hodgdon data website for further information on those numbers.

I loaded those bullets with HP38 when I was loading for that caliber. FWIW, I've found the Gold Dot bullets to be very accurate in several different caliber and powder combinations.

For mild target loads in 40 S&W (less than 800 fps) I use either WST or American Select. For loads approaching or equaling full power I prefer WSF.

I load 6.6 gr of SR-4756 under a 180 gr Remington GSJHP. I clocked these at 939 fps at 15 feet with an SD of 10. A very accurate, comfortable load in both a Beretta P-96 and an S&W 4043.

I hope that helps,

Frank

Great Minds, same frequency!

Frank,

Those are my loads only with a different bullet. I am getting right at 1000fps with mine and that should be good for any "social work" :eek:that might come along. It is a good factory duplication practice round too!

Tell, 939 fps at 15 feet is actually 972 at the muzzle. That was out of my 4 inch 4043. I would guess my 5 inch Beretta would deliver the same 1,000 that you measured. A very useful load indeed.
