.40 S&W Question

So, I'm low-key thinking of picking up a .40 S&W pistol or PCC to fill a niche. Absolutely don't need it, but you know us gun folks…

With that being said, I'm pondering either a Beretta 96 or a Smith polymer (M&P?).

Your thoughts?

Also wondering about an FP-C.

Check the police trades at AIM Surplus and King's Firearms. You can get a M&P40 1.0 in good working condition for under $250. They usually also have 2.0's and Glock 22s if you are looking for .40. I bought 5 or 6 M&Ps from AIM, one from Kings, and several Glock 22s from AIM. Condition varied from light wear in the outside, almost new on the inside, to virtually unissued/like new. Night sights are typically dead.

If you're really considering the folding carbine then a matched set, FPC and MP in .40 cal, is the way to go.

I do the same in 9mm. The MP was my carry gun before the FPC came out so it became a natural companion piece.

I bought a Beretta 96, and liked it so much that I then bought a 92.

While I absolutely love Smith & Wesson hand ejector double action revolvers, their automatics don't do anything for me. And I don't like plastic guns, even if I did like Smith & Wesson automatics.

I have a 5-inch M&P 2.0 in FDE color. Much as I disliked my original M&P 40 because of its awful trigger and "substandard" accuracy, I'm quite fond of the newer one. I also like the older P229s.

The Beretta, not so much. I like the 92F just fine, but am bothered by the need to constantly adjust my grip with the increased recoil of the 96.

How about a S&W 610 revolver? 10mm has ballistics as good or better than .357 Magnum, and .40SW fit the same chamber and moon clips. Actually, I'm a big fan of .40SW, foregoing 9mm 10 years ago with a SIG P226, P229, and P239. More recently, I went crazy and paired a 610 up with a M&P Mod 2 in 10mm.

I have a Glock model 22 and a Beretta 96D. My Glock 32 has a.40 caliber barrel as well. All are solid sidearms.

I've got a Beretta 96 and a full-size Glock .40 and like them both. I had a smaller Glock .40 a few years ago but sold it because I could never shoot it well.

Neither of these are manufactured any more, but look for a Springfield Armory EMP4 or a mid-'90's BHP MkIII in .40 S&W. Both hold 10+1 rounds. Can't go wrong with a JMB design.


If you want polymer, Ruger used to make a SR40 full size and a SR40c compact. I had the compact for a number of years, it makes a nice concealed carry. Also holds 10+1.
