Went visit my favorite LGS this morning and found a 4006 in the case. Mechanically sound but not a safe queen about 85%. this is my fourth, Gen 3, Smith & Wesson semi-auto. I'm not a fan of them but I keep finding them at reasonable prices. I took a couple of pics indoors and they came out pretty good. What can y'all tell me about the 4006? Any input would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Nice. I've got its twin around here somewhere. Nice steel frame pistol kinda heavy but that helps tame the .40 which can be snappy. I bought mine last fall $400 in original box with 5 magazines. How'd you fare ?

Got the gun with one magazine and no box for $400.00. I'm happy with it and plan to shoot it this weekend. Any idea what the numbers on the barrel, right side of the slide and frame are?

My Glock 40 and Sigma 40 were snappy and were traded off pretty fast. My 4026 Smith was almost perfect but sold it to a K9 Deputy here . Now my CHP 4006 is the perfect 40!!!!! Nothing tames the 40 like a bunch of stainless steel!

Those 3 matching numbers are typical of 4006's used by a Law Enforcement agency... they are known as "rack numbers".

Below is my 4006 issued to California State Park Rangers.

Let's see, what's to know about the S&W 4006.
It's chambered in 40 S&W.
It's likely to fit in holsters designed for the 5906.
It has a stainless steel barrel, slide, and receiver.
It's heavy, but that helps minimize recoil.
It's barrel offers really good case head support, something I think is important in the 40 S&W.
The matching numbers on the right side indicate it was the property of a law enforcement or government agency.
Law enforcement and government agency weapons are generally carried a lot, shot very little.
Yours also has the adjustable rear sight, which adds to the value of the weapon.
I would highly recommend a good cleaning and lubrication of this weapon before firing it, a new recoil spring is also a good idea as you have no way of knowing how many cycles the current spring has seen.
My rule of thumb for recoil spring replacement: 4 inch or longer barrel, every 5000 rounds. Shorter barrel, every 3000 rounds.

About eight years ago, I bought a used Model 4006 that the gun store said came from a California le department "police trade-in". Though there is no agency designation anywhere on the pistol, in addition to the serial number (TVD 80xx), the letter/numbers A4520 is stamped on the right sides of the frame and slide. Any idea what they stand for? "Rack" number?
Thanks for any information on this pistol.

I have been using my Model 4006 as a carry gun, which I purchased used, for several years. I have found it to be reliable and accurate and the weight keeps the recoil in the satisfactory category. IMO this is one of the best pistols ever produced in 40 S&W. I expect you'll be pleased with your purchase.

Does the serial # start with CHP ?
If so the numbers on the frame, slide and barrel should be the same numbers os the serial numbers. CHPXXXX
I have a Cal Hwy Patrol 4006 TSW with the intergrail rail.

I recently learned, through using the 'search" function here, that the early CHP guns serial numbers didn't start with CHP. The control numbers on these early guns control numbers are prefaced with the letter A, B, C, Etc. The hammer is bobbed and my example has a magazine safety. I just purchased a 4006 last Friday. It's about 99% and has a standard hammer and no magazine safety. I plan to take some pic tonight or this weekend and post them side by side here.

M4006's Side by Side

Finally found time to snap a couple of pics of both M4006's side by side. The newer one doesn't have a ramp front sight, the hammer isn't bobbed, the front of the trigger guard is serrated, it doesn't have a magazine safety, and it has night sights. Here are a couple of pics.

It's great to see and read some "love" for the 4006. Thanks Fredo for posting yours. They are great guns and the 3rd Gen platform is maybe the best ever for the .40 S&W. I love mine, enjoy yours.

I have a 4046TSW DAO I recently purchased at the gun show in Orlando. They were corporate trade-ins from Brinks (had their logo laser etched on the right side of the slide) and aside from the expected grime it was in beautiful shape. Even the night sights still had life left in them. Pistol with one magazine was $319, so essentially they were forcing me to buy it!

I prefer Hogue grips (can be found almost anywhere and are easy as sin to install on these pistols), and CDNN sports online has surplus CHP magazines in stainless for $10 each. The ones I got have the red end caps (typical CHP) but were in excellent condition albeit dirty. A new recoil spring at factory spec cost me all of $6.

Cleaned everything up, took it to the range with my nephew and it performed wonderfully. Even with the few extra $$ I spent on the grips, mags and new spring it was some of the best money I've ever spent on a used pistol.

The 3rd gen S&W semi-auto pistols are excellent guns. The extra weight of all that stainless steel really helps tame the recoil. Enjoy yours!
