OK, I think I have this but I am confused on the details. I picked up a LNIB 4013 a while back, nice thin gun with two 8 round single stack mags and then I see other 4013's with double stack mags. Since when did SW start making two different guns with the same model designation?

Yep both are nice guns. Prefer the TSW double stack for daily carry but the single stack is a really beefy pistol built on the .45 cal frame. Those make a GREAT base for a 10mm conversion!

S&W has "messed up" model names and numbers now and then. The one that particularly annoys me right now is calling their 5-shot .44 Magnum both a "Model 69" AND a "Combat Magnum". Neither of those are appropriate, in my view, but it's their show and who knows how they come up with the logic that drives their decisions. :D

The 4013 single stack is on the large frame.

The 4013TSW double stack is on the medium frame. They made them without a rail (pre-rail) & later with a rail.

Without a doubt the 4013 is the stronger.

The 4013 weighs 29.5 oz & the 4013TSW pre-rail weighs 27.5 oz, both wearing Hogues.

I have, & like, both but the 4013 is my favorite.

6906 is really a 6903?

You picked up a LNIB 4013, lucky you. I've always preferred the relatively thin single stack .40 S&W. I'm the original owner of this little guy from the mid 1990s. Even though I don't shoot it much, it has never disappointed. ;) The shot to the upper right was . . . you guessed it, my fault. :o

For those that like More Power :), the 4013/4014 single stacks are easily convertible to safely chamber and fire the 10MM Auto cartridge

I have converted both my 4013 and 4014

The 10MM Auto conversion can not be done to the smaller framed 4013TSW

I love that BLUEDOT37 photographed that nice set of barrel comparisons between the two firearms.
