I am new to the forum and handguns, and want a Mtn. Gun for trail use and home defense. I just ran across a Stainless Steel .41 mag mtn. gun in very good condition for $525. Is this as good of a deal as I think? Thanks in advance.

That's a pretty good price, by today's standards. Those guns had MIM hammers and triggers, and frame mounted firing pins, IIRC. Mine is a very good shooter and has never given a lick of trouble. It is one of the nicer Mountain Guns to shoot. If it is in good condition, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it at that price.

I have a 25-13 MG that has the MIM hammer and trigger, have had no problems with it. That's a good price, I just saw a 657 .41 Magnum 4-inch that was non-factory drilled and tapped for $650.

..no probably about it. Even without box or paperwork they start at $650 and work their way up. Over on GunBroker.com there is one LNIB for $1200. I have seen them sell for $900+ with the box.

I have two...it is probably my favorite S&W.

Hope you made the buy Buckeye....

Well, I didi nit get the gun. Even though it was a good deal, I decided to wait on a purchase until I can find exactly what I need. Thinking a .41 or .45 colt mtn. gun (cats, black bear, meth cookers, pot growers will be my on-trail concerns). Until I can recognize functional flaws in a used revolver I will look for a new one for now. Thanks for the replies...

You might want to seek some more advice on that decission.

Buckeye...the late 1990s pre-lock guns that S&W put out were some toughest S&W ever made. A lot of people complain about the firing pin being moved to a frame mounted type and the MIM parts.. Althogh most of my guns are pre-MIM those that I have with the MIM parts are some of the smoothest out of the box shooters I have ever had from S&W.

You also turned down a gun that was worth more than you were going to pay for it...and will be worth more in the long run over a gun with the IL.

99% of the guns I own are "pre-enjoyed". You pay a lot less and if you don't like it don't loose much when selling. In the case of most MGs, especially the 657 and 629, people buy them, fire one or two cylinder full of full charge loads and say they have had enough of that. I have two 657s, one 629 and three Taurun Titanium Trackers that all had less than a box through them...

The only reason not to buy is if there was a 629 44 mag sitting next to it!!

Seriously, my friend and I carried a model 58 and a 629 on our last alaska bear hunt and both of us felt adequately protected.

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to see if the .41 mag is still on the table this weekend. I was just trying to resist making a purchase that I might regret(I have been known to make big purchases based on impulse not knowledge before). It is obvious that I should have listened to my impulsive side this time.

The only thing you might want to think about is if you really want a 41Mag. It is a fine caliber, but if you don't handload it could be costly to fire, but so would a 44Mag. Wayne Bosowicz of Foggy Mountain Outfitters is a premier Black Bear Guide. Wayne told me he carries a 41Mag MG loaded with factory 215gr Bullets and he has shot a boat load of bear with this gun. Good Luck.

I do not handload, yet. But I plan to get started soon. My choices for calibers are .41 mag, .44mag, and .45 colt. All of which are (relatively speaking) somewhat expensive to shoot regularly. My reason for these 3 calibers being black bear encounters(had a couple of them) and big cougars. I backpack/bowhunt and need to carry enough gun to handle these critters, and I would rather have more gun and not need it. .357 seems to be the smallest caliber that might handle my needs, but I would rather carry more than I need.
On more than one occasion I have retraced my steps while hunting and have found fresh cougar tracks on my trail that were not there minutes before. Scary stuff.... I realize that I might not get a chance to react to a cat or bear with a gun, but I would rather have the option...

I own N frames in all of those calibers, and .45 a.c.p. The .45 Colt is the least powerful of those cartridges. Certainly it can be handloaded hot, but the N frame is not the best platform for hot-rodding a .45 Colt; many of the reloading manuals plainly state this.

If I were anticipating quick, up close encounters of the butt puckering kind I think I would choose a S&W #58 .41 magnum. Fixed sights, 4" barrel...looks like a S&W #10 on steroids. I would carry it in a crossdraw holster, about the only way to carry and wear a backpack at the same time, and have the gun accessible.

Here is my #58.
