Looking for ideas and feedback on .410's. Have not owned 1 in around 40 years. What is good, accurate, not super expensive. There many critters that need to be eliminated. (coons, groundhogs etc.) Thought about a Governor. Used is fine.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Does not matter on round count. Thanks, Bob

You’ll have better luck dispatching varmints with a shotgun, versus a .45/.410 handgun. .410 shotgun shell are also a lot more expensive than 20 and 12 gauge. Some people start young shooters with a .410, but it’s most commonly used by expert class skeet shooters. 20 ga is much more effective and you’ll find a broader choice of loads.

You should be able to pick up a 20 ga single shot for $150 or less and it will dispatch ground hogs and raccoons out to 30-40 yards with the right loads. If I was gunning for critters that size, I’d use a .22 LR or .22 MWR rifle. You’ll stretch your range considerably and save even more money on ammo.

A 410 shotgun is a short range weapon at best, a 410 handgun much more so. I'll say step up to a larger shotgun and avoid wounding as many varmints. A 20 gauge or even 12 with light field loads will offer a lot more killing potential without tons of recoil. As s&wchad wrote, the 22LR or 22 WMR would probably make a better all around varmint gun.

Depends on the amount you'd be willing to spent, just for the coolness factor the Winchester 9410 would be something you might consider.

410 caliber Big Game Shotgun

My Feedback about the .410 Shotgun is that
you are headed in the correct direction for
what you need to "Take Care of Pests".

My experience with my .410s is that on the
Farm the .410 is perfect. First off, I feel safe
when dispatching rodents around the Farm
Buildings.

Second; Shells easy to stuff in pockets, Low noise,
no richoets, and plenty of power for getting rid of
Gophers, Squirrels, Skunks, and Racoons.
Clay target pigeons are fun to shoot at from a Thrower.

Third; I have also found that guns are usually light,
easy to handle, and somewhat compact.

The best priced .410 ammo is at Walmart.
Once in a while I find Cabela's has it for
$7.50/box. Yes it may be spendy but it's
not like your plinking with a AR15.

I'm always on the look out for a .410 Gun.
Last year I got lucky with a well priced Mossberg
Synthetic Black Plastic Stocked Pump Action (when
Wife looked at it, it was quickly claimed by her!).

The Best to you and on your Endeavor in finding
a .410 that you like.

My antique below, Western Field Bolt Action.

If you are not opposed to a long gun I can recommend a used Stevens/Savage 22/410. It gives you the option of using cheaper 22 or the 410. Slugs or snake shot.

I have had mine for many years and is the most used out on the farm.

That is 1 that I had many years ago. Didn't have the practical need for it then. Do now! Thanks, Bob

I don't have a big property, but a little over 4 acres. 1/2, or more is woods.
Like your .410. There is a New Haven bolt action for sale on a classified site for $140. Been thinking about it. Thanks, Bob

I agree that the Savage 24 over under is great. They’re getting a little pricey now.
A Mossberg pump is very economical and pretty accurate. At least mine is.
The pinnacle would be a SxS double in .410, but not cheap

Really? I shoot a 410 under & over on doves and skeet. I hold my own with the 12 & 20 guys. A 410 will shoot ....Just as far....At the same speed......As any 12 or 20.....Just with a smaller elongated pattern.......Try it sometimes.

I have a single-shot Bronco .410, and a Tri-Star over and under.
I hunted grouse and rabbits some with the Bronco for a while after I
bought it, but went back to my 16 and 20 gauges.

My youngest son hunted with the OU a bit but got no shots at grouse. I have shot clays and tin cans with it. I think it would made a fine
rabbit gun but rabbits are scare here now, and I haven't had a
chance to prove it. Maybe this year.

I learned years ago that an extension of the maxim “beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it,” extends to folks that show-up on a hunt with a .410 or 28 gauge double or O/U. Be prepared to be made a fool of with your 12 gauge, because they probably know how to use those small bore shotguns.
