This S&W .455 Mark II Hand Ejector 2nd Model went to 43 Squadron Royal Flying Corps in August of 1916. The squadron went to France for combat service in January 1917. In March 1917, Frederick Libby, the first American Ace of WW I joined the squadron as a pilot. The gun was assigned to "L" flight and carried the issue number for that flight of "27."
With the pistol are a WW I leather flying cap and a rare silver Omega WW I Pilots watch. Photos include officers of 43 Squadron, a flight of 43 Squadron planes with the flight letters visible on the side of the aircraft and a recruiting poster.
Still in the original .455 caliber, at some point the gun was plated and mother of pearl grips have been added.
