I have a buddy making me a wooden box modeled after an original 44 American box of ammunition. Would anyone possibly know the dimensions of this box? It won’t let me post a pic, but it says 12 Martin cartridges.

I believe you are referring to a packet that is 2 rows of 6 each? I can supply you an image of the cartridges, but do not know how much the packaging papers add to this dimension?

Fortunately just checked the Pitman Notes on US Martial Small Arms & Ammunition, Volume 2, and it has the paper dimensions, so that should be your answer. Bottom photo is a little hard to read, but pretty sure it is 2.915"L x 1.415"W x .995"H.

Good timing indeed. Just reading an article in Handloader magazine that I got in the mail yesterday. Mostly on early Colt ammo but does reference S&W.
