Couldn't resist adding this to my oddball targets. It's a .44 Special second model, shipped 8/22, with the barrel shortened to 3 3/4". King mirror front and target rear sights have been added. The grips are a beautiful set of Hogue (?) rosewoods (?). If I went to any barbeques I think this might qualify.

Bob, any guess on the date of the surgery and rear sight.
That's easy- It was done on Tuesday, Sept 8, 1931. He cut the barrel about 11 am and broke for lunch. Had a ham sammich with swiss on rye and a coke. The sammich was lousy. He jumped back on it and finished by quittin time. Name was Joe. Made $1.85 on that gun. ;)

Seriously- how could he know? :p

Man, what a great gun.

You should get to poking around for some older grips though, the hogues are wonderful for shooting (in my hand) but they don't quite fit the character of the gun. Are they two piece? Any chance you can remove them from the gun and show us more of them? Should be able to give you some more info on the grips if you do.

By the way, never re-finish that, its perfect as it is and a re-finish would ruin it forever. If you ever get that urge just sell it to me and I will park it along side my registered magnum with the same finish "issues".

By the way. The finish on it looks to be the result of cleaning it with something that removed the blue. I've observed a number of guns with this look and I am convinced that it's the result of someone using something on it that they shouldn't have. Possibly in an effort to wipe some surface rust, or pitting, off, without thinking or knowing that it would also remove the bluing.

Any of those would go well with my cut-down .38-44 HD...I just picked up yet another Lew Horton 3" 24-3 this weekend, but an older .44 Special would be great for carry......Ben
