I have never heard of a cartridge identified as 40-44. However, 44 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) is also know as 44-40 (44 caliber with 40 grains of black powder).

Welcome. I wonder which name came first? I assume 44 Winchester, but can you imagine how S&W would have hated to stamp the name "Winchester" on a Smith & Wesson??

Another familiar caliber is 32 Winchester or 32-20. Smith & Wesson changed the name as soon as they could to eliminate their competitors name from their K frame gun barrels.

I was just reading an article by John Taffin about the 44 Winchester. Marlin began calling it the 44/40 so they wouldn't have to put Winchester on their rifles.
