45 Schofields in 45 Colt ?

Found about 400 rounds of 45 Schofield on a shelf at a deal and was wondering if they are ok for target plinking in a revolver chambered for 45 Colt. The colt cartridges can be pricey, especially close to cowboy action season. - Thanks

Yes.

.45 Schofield cartridges should be fine in modern .45 Colt revolvers but you can expect them to be low powered. As a historical note the US Army issued large quantities of .45 Schofield cartridges for use in both guns when both were in use. That is supposed to have started usage of the term ".45 Long Colt" to distinguish between the two.

Thanks for the info. Bought a box of fifty to try. I will make a deal on the rest if they do okay. I have one hundred percent confidence in the reliability based on the responses here; just want to see how they do. Hope to get the other 350 for around a hundred bucks.

Just so you know, 45 Schofields have a wider rim than 45 Colt. About .520 vs about .512 for 45 Colt. MOST revolvers chambered for 45 Colt will have no problem with the wider rims. My Colts do not. However the clearance is a little bit tighter with a Ruger Vaquero or Blackhawk, and I have two Vaqueros that needed a little bit of work with a file in order to accept Schofield rounds in one chamber each. The rounds would not seat all the way in one chamber on each cylinder.

I do not own a S&W chambered for 45 Colt, so I do not know if there is a clearance problem at the ejector star with the Schofiled round or not. However, since S&W invented the Schofield round, hopefully they kept that in mind with their 45 Colt Hand Ejectors.

Thanks for the info. I did measure the rim with a dial caliper and noticed the different diameter. They were low power, but shot fine in my taurus 450 revolver. - thanks

They work just fine in my S&W 625 and 25-5 revolvers ! $15.00 a box is a nice price. Whose brass???
