I had been wanting to try an older S&W automatic, originally trying to home in on a 10mm, but a reasonable 4506 wandered my way. I had a couple of thoughts about the trigger that I am trying to wrap my head around. In SA, there is a little free travel and then a clunk in the take up. After field stripping, it appears that there is a surface on the trigger, that what I am going to call the trigger bar rides up on as the slack is drawn in, and hence the clunk. It does not seem to do this in a DA pull.

Another thing is that the trigger, at times, feels gritty. I have seen that S&W used stampings for the hammer strut, magazine safety, and other small parts. Is it a good idea to file or stone the stamping tails off the parts to see if that could be some of what I am feeling? Is that just a characteristic of older S&W automatics?

I have the same thing happen in SA with my CS40. I hate it. I posted about it hoping to get some help on possibly fixing it.

A previous post should fix your trigger play spring issue unless the spring is broke off.

Ref your gritty trigger.....it could be an accumilation of firing debris or some type of grit entered the interior frame which means a full strip down is in order.

If you are in south tx....I can help you. If not....I suggest getting the agi video on 3rd gen sw.

I once took my cqb's and dpa and took a stone (not a file) and massaged the trigger bar and other internal sharp edges which improved trigger feel/smoothness.

Do not changed any angles, you are just smoothing/adding wear to the trigger components. I even smoothed the trigger bar track in the frame.

If u don't have experience working on sw semi's, find u a competent smith familiar with this ty. Years ago....sw pc did an excellant duty trigget job. On a 4506-1
