Looking at a 4516-2 and wanting to know what you think I should offer for it. The guy is the second owner and bought it from a retired LEO. Comes with one OEM 7-round magazine, and four OEM 8-round magazines (originally for the model 4506). What would be a fair price for the package? I have a commander sized 1911 and used to have a standard 1911 so this would be my first .45 S&W. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

I purchased a 4516-2 in May 2020 for $515, it was an LEO trade in with one magazine. The four additional magazines with your proposed purchase add an additional $160-$200 over and above the cost of a handgun with one magazine.

$600 would be my upper limit, but that's not to say that it isn't worth more.

I really like my 4516-2, but its too heavy to carry regularly. On the rare occasion when I do carry it, it is in a Bianchi X15 shoulder holster, under a winter coat.

I would estimate the value in the area of 600-650.. The -2 would one of the latter revisions.. Not sure if there was a -3..

There were 4 variants of the 4516. The 4516 (1988-89) had some reported feed issues resulting in a redesign to the 4516-1 (1989-1992). Changes reportedly included frame / slide / barrel feed ramp / magazine changes. The 4516-1 was an improvement but reportedly did not cure all the issues.

The 4516-2 (1993-1997) changes included a redesign from a single recoil spring to a dual recoil spring and further magazine changes which reportedly resolved the feed issues. The final iteration sometimes referred to as the dash 3 (less common 1997-????) was a minor variant off the 4516-2 but as I recall, it no longer carried the 4516-n markings.

The 4516-2 or the dash 3 appear to be the most desirable. It is worth noting that some of the 4516 and 4516-1 were retrofitted with the dual spring using a bushing at the end of the slide to accommodate the smaller diameter guide rod.

The early magazines (yellow and orange followers) were typically marked for specific dash numbers only. In addition to the follower changes, there were potentially significant changes in the top metal lips. The final magazine with the black follower is supposed to be backwards compatible and were issued with later pistols such as the as 7rd 4513TSW (circa 2000) etc. There is a detailed discussion of mags on this forum. https://smith-wessonforum.com/smith...-magazines.html?highlight=4516+mag+variations

Similar changes occurred on the 8rd 4506 mags. As far as magazine compatibility I would assume the later 8rd mags with black follower could be used in a 4516-2 but would stick out. Correct 4506 / 4516 mags are relatively scarce sell at a premium - think $50-60 or more.

I would guess $600 in good condition with 2 correct mags but no box or other docs. If you think the earlier 8rd 4506 mags with yellow and orange followers that stick out are a plus, add a bit. Personally I would save the earlier yellow and orange follower mags for range use or you can probably peddle the early 4506 mags in classifieds below.

In fairness, others here have reported the 4516, and 4516-1 mags with yellow and orange followers can be used interchangeably with the late 4516-2 mags with black followers.

Prices above may be a bit low. I previously owned a few third gens including a 4516 and 4513 TSW. I agree the 4516 is a bit heavy and carried the 4513 for awhile. I kept a two tone 457 which was a fine gun, but could not live with the poor slide finish. I presently own a WVSP 4566 but believe it will be too heavy for carry.

Added to say I used to have over 20 various S&W 7 and 8 round mags . They all worked perfectly in whatever iteration of third gen Smith I owned.

I have a 457.
I am very happy with it.
I often think how nice it would be to get a 4516, but then I see something else...(sigh). Here follows what I say to the newbies, if I think they will listen. Please correct me with my thanks!

1.) Carry. If you are going to have this gun with you and in your hand when the trial, the crisis of life and death, happens to you, or your loved ones, then it is worth exactly the price of your sorry existence ;-)
2.) Investment. If it is going to sit in the safe and then be sold by your heirs, you should set the value much lower.

For carry you should get what you believe in and get good with it.
As you grow and learn, this will change because you will eventually learn that a lot of what you think, and even what passes for gospel here on our wonderful forum, is just not true.
"You can buy the most expensive golf clubs and still suck at the game!"

For investment remember that a gun will never keep pace with inflation.
However, you can tell your wife this,
"A gun is never worth nothing, which is more than I can say for the US dollar!"
My wife knows I love the guns.
She knows that I want them to go to the kids.
The kids will want the one they think I carried and used. I taught her how to sell the rest.

Rarely see them in my area for sale. If he will let you field strip it, and it passes your inspection, buy it. Good luck either way.

I haven't seen a -2 for sale in a while, however Gunbroker shows three or so -1 (considered a less desirable model to some) pistols that sold for $550 - $570. 4506 mags seem to sell for $50 - $60 or more so that may help you establish a total value for your deliberations.
