Field stripped my 4516 the other night to clean it. After cleaning, I began reassembling and when I put the slide on and down over the levers, it would not move past the hammer. Wouldn't budge. Is it possible one of the levers popped up and is impinging on the bottom of the slide? Never experienced this with any of my other 3rd gens.
****UPDATE****
I shipped the gun back to the factory last week. I got it back today and they determined the problem was the ejector. They replaced the part and now I will go out and test fire it. Turn around time was less than two weeks. Thank you Smith & Wesson.

Take an ice cream stick, or flat piece of wood. Push down all the levers with it, and try putting the slide back while holding them all down flat. Works for me.

Also make sure your mag is out. Slide won't go on with a magazine in. Regards 18DAI.

The mag is not in the well and the levers are all covered by the slide right up to the point the hammer goes into the slide. It stops dead. Can't budge it.

It might be the recoil rod slipped out of it's hold notch and binding the slide.
Nope. I removed the rod and assembled the gun upside down to insure the barrel stayed put. Got it as far as the hammer and it stops. I even tried it with the barrel out too and the same thing occurs. I already called SW and they are sending me a shipping label. It goes back to them on Monday.

Yeah, you've got something else going on. If the hammer is moving freely there must be a problem with the firing pin safety/mag safety and/or levers. Let us know what S&W comes back with.

sometimes you need to center the barrel in the slide.

if the feed ramp is angle slightly (which can happen), the slide will never go on.

just turn the slide upside down, center the feed ramp and try to install.

just a thought

Glad S&W got it fixed fast for you. I had some thing similar happen to me with my 4516 once. The ejector broke and I could not get the slide back on fully. S&W sent me a new one free of change.
