I'm going to start reloading 45 Colt for my MG. Are .454 dia lead bullets safe to load at moderate velocities in a modern revolver?
Thanks,
Ken

MG is Mountain Gun. Thanks for the assistance.

Ken, If you use a Keith Style bullet you may have trouble chambering the rounds if your chamber throats are .452. It's best to slug your bore and measure the chamber throats before you start loading. The Keith style bullets have a full diameter front driving band. Most other style bullets won't give you any trouble and .002" is not enough to matter in moderate loads with lead bullets. Dave

You should "slug" the barrel, (find the true diameter of the barrel), then get bullets 1mm larger than the bore. Try that, then experiment with different diameter bullets.

They have good bullets at reasonable prices.

What is MG, Is that machine gun?

I think you mean 0.001" larger. A mm is approx. 0.040"

In a word yes, a lead bullet will swage down nicely in the cylinder and bore. The critical dimension in shooting lead bullets out of a revolver is the cylinder throat diameter, this is the size you need for any particular revolver. The only exception to this is if the cylinder throat diameter is smaller than bore size and will need reamed out to the diameter needed. You see if your cylinder throat size is say .456" and you shoot a .452" bullet out of it the bullet being smaller than the cylinder throat will skid and yaw and enter the forcing cone off center and will really have a bad effect on accuracy.
