Greetings all, I found this site while researching a 25-5 that I just won on GB, and I have a quick question I can't answer with search. There seems to be a ton of new S&W .45acp cylinders available these days, can I fit one to the 25-5, or is the cylinder too short?

Welcome to the forum.
IIRC, I believe most can be fitted to your gun but the 625-10's used a shorter cylinder that would require a -10 or similar barrel in order to use the -10 cylinder.
If memory serves me, overall cylinder length; app. 1.54" opposed to 1.42"
Of course due to the short barrel length, the -10's front lockup utilized a ball detent on the yoke instead of a conventional locking lug and IMO would not be readily doable, but I'm not an expert.

There is a large gunshop in Phoenix that seems to have a bucketload of 45 acp cylinders, complete with extractor, but they don't say what model the cylinder is from. I might take a chance and buy one, but I was wondering if in general, the cylinder gap would be correct if I fit this cylinder to my 25-5. Seems like it might. I had a convertible 1917 decades ago, and it was pretty cool to shoot two rounds out of the same gun.

Welcome to the forum. I would investigate the feasibility and cost of having your existing cylinder cut for moonclips to hold .45ACP and allow you to still shoot .45 Colt. I believe Cylinder & Slide does this type of work, among others......

I would moon clip cut your existing cylinder.
TK will do the conversion for $100.
Welcome to TK Custom.com & Moonclips.com

After the conversion the gun will still shoot 45 Colt as well as 45acp. It will NOT fire 45AR however. Not a real big deal considering it will work fine with 45 Colt.

Ranch Products makes a good moon clip for the 45acp, and much cheaper than TK's. Just for info.

That is an awesome suggestion, and a perfect solution. Thanks!

hi, im in the same boat but i want to buy a 45ACP complete cylinder because i don't want to customize the original because my S&W 25 is a 1-300 edition and they come with a special "gray" cylinder.

buy i try some searches and i don;t find where to buy it a 45 ACP cylinder, anyone can recommends me an online store? My revolver have a 5" barrel i need to find any special cylinder?

thanks in advance.

The 25-2 cylinder is too short to work in a 25-5 due to the fact that the rear of the barrel on the 25-2 is longer than on the 25-5. You would end up with an extremely excessive barrel/cylinder gap, that would be absolutely unsafe to shoot.
If you want this conversion, try and find an extra 25-5 cylinder and have it fitted and then cut for 45ACP using moon clips. That way you would have the originality of the gun with the one cylinder and be able to shoot 45ACP with the other.
When all is said and done, it might be about the same price to just pick up a good used 25-2 and have the best of both worlds. My 25-2 is one of the most accurate handguns I own and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything!

thank you for you response, well, i think maybe $200 in a 25-5 cylinder + $100 for the customization to accept moon clips = $300 vs $700 of a used S&W 25-2, is a $400 difference :-)

but i don't find where to buy a 25-5 cylinder, any idea? i made some google search and nothing.

the short answer is, NO you can't just buy a cylinder & install it yourself.

The long answer is, yes, it can be done, but you'd need a qualified gunsmith to do the fitting.
Also, a gunsmith may be able to find a cylinder as well.
