.460 Mag XVR grouping

First off let me start by saying hello. This site is great and has a wealth of knowledge.

I recently purchased a 8 3/8" XVR .460. I mounted a Leupold FX-II 2x scope with a set of weigand combat bases and rings. I finally got to shoot it and the best I could do was 6" groups at 50 yards with Hornady 200 gr rounds. Everything I have read seems most guns like this round and shoot really good groups. The scope was previously on my 44 mag and worked fine and held zero with no issues.

I'm looking for suggestions on where I should start trouble shooting this issue and figured someone else may have had the same issue in the past?

I'm trying to not have to pull the scope off if at all possible.

I fired last fall 18 rounds or the 200gr factory Hornady loads. The grouping was terrible. All over the place, and at 15-20 yards. I was at my wits ends, then come to find out, my screw that holds the rear sight in place was loose. So I think that might have been my problem. Or my gun might still not like those rounds. My gun loves .45 colts, .454 ( it groups awesome with .454s). As for the .460 rounds, I am still not sure about the 200gr Hornady rounds, as I did not fire any more of those rounds, after I tightened the rear screw that holds the sight on. Btw, you have the same Handgun scope I have, the 2 power Leopold. I do not have my 2x on my .460, as I like open sights, and I like to wear it on my hip. I did have the 2x power on my .22 semi pistol, I was amazed at the grouping off of the shooting bench, they are great scopes. Your choice in scope is solid. But in order to begin to diagnose the issue, you may end up wanting to pull the scope and see how it groups with open sights. You don't necessarily have to shoot great distance to get an idea, 25yds with open sights should be sufficient to give you an idea if you issue is with the scope, the revolver, or you the shooter. Don't be to proud to admit that it might actually be you, we all need practice, myself included.

Have you had a friend who is an accomplished shooter try it?

True, as you might be flinching from the recoil. And I know I have to practice more. That is a good excuse to do more shooting!!!

Thanks for the reply i was thinking the same thing pull the scope and shoot it with open sights, just not what i wanted to hear. Im definitely not to proud to admit it could be me but i was shooting the 460 and my SRH 44 mag from a set of bags. The 44 mag had very tight groups at 70 yards and I find it has more recoil than the .460.

Noise on the other hand the .460 wins all day

Well, before pulling the scope you might just want to see if another shooter can group with it. But since you are able to lay down good groups with a hard recoiling 44, I'm thinking it's quite possible that you are not the issue.

And of course there is nothing at all wrong with loading some different ammo recipes to try. I only ever fired one box of the Hornady factory 200 gr ammo out of mine.. Been reloading for it since, mostly 240 grain XTP Mags.

I can confirm it is not a bullet selection issue. I have shoot 200 FTX out of every length barrel offered with good results.

With a ransom rest these have produced 1.25" groups at 50yards with 7.5" barrel.

Its takes practice to shoot consistent groups with X-frames.

Other have said make sure your scope mounting is good (and check it periodically) shoot shorter distance to confirm your equipment.

Regarding grouping and individual accuracy, I like Massad Ayoub's take on groups. Five shot groups, he throws out the worst one as everyone tosses a round occasionally, even the best.

I think that applies to me when shooting heavier loads in the 500. Combination sometimes of fatigue and holding the gun offhand too long before completing the press resulting in one outside the rest of the 3 or 4. Don
