Best Hodgdon/Winchester powder for 38 super - 9mm/38 Caliber - Brian Enos's Forums... Maku mozo!

I read today that Chris Hodgdon says that all of these powders will be discontinued by the end of 2014. Go see post 11 for the direct email from him.

It is unfortunate in that I consider 4756 my go to powder for 38/44 and 38 Super. I have about 11 lbs of it right now and will have to accumulate several more 8 lb cans. I also will pick up several more 8 lb jugs of PB. The other two are not familiar to me so I may just grab 3 or 4 lbs if I can find it.

I can understand 4756 is not a "sexy" new powder but boy for what it does it is great. Newer powders like Longshot work, but seem to be high in Nitro which makes them burn hotter in my experience. I don't like the heat especially with Lil-gun.

It is times like this I get really upset at all of the experiments I have run and testing I have done on different powders. There are times I think I should just buy only Alliant powders and move on. Bullseye, Unique, 2400 etc.

Oh well, just thought you should know.

4759........oh no.
No more reduced loads...............

Winchester and Hodgdon usually had the same powders just in different labels. Looks like they are finally getting it down to just one bottle and tossing out a few of the "Oldies but goodies" in the move.

At least they gave us all a heads up !!

SR4756 and SR7625 have been my handgun(9mm,38sp,357M,40S&W,10mm,44sp,44M) powders since the mid 70s'. I've got 3 lbs of SR7625 and 5 lbs of SR4756. Time to get more !

unfortunate, 8 pounders of 7625 took a big jump in price recently. Use a lot of it for 9mm 115 fmj practice loads, very accurate.

I'm down to my last 12 pounds of 4759 and six pound of PB.

PB makes a very nice target load too but I can understand why they would discontinue it.
Porous is harder to make and I have never met anyone else around here that uses it.
I can make do with Universal, Unique etc.
Too bad though; PB is the cleanest burning number of the lot.

Now that lead is no longer smelted here, just wait till they go after powder.

The problem will be finding load data for alternates.:(

Considering all the SR powders were originally shotgun powders and hardly anyone these days still use them in shotguns I can sorta understand them being discontinued if sales are bad. There are many newer powders that do what 4756 and 7625 do and probably a little better. Promo and Red Dot are much more popular than PB so sales are probably bad there too. SR4759 on the other hand is a mystery to me. It is an outstanding powder for light rifle loads and lead bullets in rifles and has been for a very long time. That is the only one I will miss even though AA5744 is similar. AA5744 costs a lot of money whereas SR4759 doesn't. I guess I'm going to have to try and find an 8lb jug of SR4759 before they are gone. Good luck to me in this environment!!!

With so many new powders introduced in the last few years it is
inevitable that some of the less popular powders will fall by the
wayside. There is a general trend toward ball powders and away from
flake powders in the newer propellents.

That is true but ball powders are known to burn hotter and tend to "flame cut" due to abrasion on revolvers more than stick or flake. For this reason I tend to avoid them.

Alliant here I come.....

Bad news. I like 7625. Being a shotgunner who is recoil sensitive, I always used it in 20-ga target loads. It really does seem to kick less, for some reason. I also used it for target loads in some of my pistols. They should discontinue that silly 800X that won't meter in any known powder measure and leave 7625 alone.

Those of us that are old enough should remember that SR4759 was discontinued one other time and then brought back because reloaders demanded it for reduced loads.

For those of you that collect minutiae, at one time SR4759 was used for the explosive charge that separated the stages of multiple stage rockets. I picked up 24 pounds a few years ago when it was surplused out at a price I could not turn down.

SR4759

Although not a user of this powder for center fire it is the "best" for me in my Savage muzzle-loader and is one of the powders Savage centerpieces in the owners manual.

The SR prefix for DuPont powders does not indicate shotgun use, but stands for Sporting Rifle, just as IMR stands for Improved Military Rifle. PB is an original shotgun power, however. PB is very useful for shotgun loads for older and Damascus barrel shotguns. It can be used to duplicate black powder pressures and velocities, is very clean burning and is not temperature sensitive. Some people also use SR 7625 for low pressure loads, but I have heard reports that it becomes unreliable at low temperatures.

Yeah, the Speer # 8 is out and it shows that all those other reloading manuals are WAY conservative. If you want a 158 grain 357 Magnum that clocks 1800 fpr out of a 4 inch barrel Speer #8 will tell you how to do it. ;)

While I currently have 10 or 12 lbs. of SR7625 on hand it's rather obvious that those who use this powder either start a write-in campaign or look for an alternate. Next time I see 8 lbs. kegs of Accurate #5 for sale I will probably have to buy 4 of them. Because while it does result in a bit more velocity than 7625 it's the only powder I know of that yields a low flash, clean shooting load and also meters wonderfully. BTW, I would really prefer to keep using SR7625 because it produces a distinctly soft shooting load for the velocity produced.

Scooter, I think you should "Man up" and get some good high recoil powder !! (Joke)

Man , just when you have things "ironed out" someone tosses a monkey wrench into the wheels !!

Dropping bullets is one thing but dropping powders, really upsets the apple cart!!

I hate it when you have to go back to the drawing board.......

Hope we can all stock up before the bottom falls out.
It "Aint a pretty sight"

Could cause a guy to have a few "Shots" !!
