so ive been shooting 55 gr Amer Eagle stuff and works great. but i would like to start upping my distance. have a 20" bull barrel AR with i think a 1/9. so i know i can get the SS109's all day but a bit over kill for plinking and match shooting.

what can i get to fit the bill?

5.56
62 grain
FMJ(BT)
Bulk

Thanks!

Just get a new upper that has a 1x7 twist barrel will shoot the 62 grain bullet fine. And for sights get the collapsaable front and rear as backup sights. Frank

a 20in 1-9 should shoot the 62s. My 1-10 shoots 68s sub MOA at 300 yds. If you want to shoot more distance then get match bullets. 52/53s will shoot out to 300 but are more wind sensitive. 68/69s would be my reccomendation. Some will say 75s. You only need 1-7 or 1-8 if you are gonna shoot the 77 or 80s, or you have a short barrel that limits velocity.

well my goal to to have my normal ammo thats good for 300 or so. then my match ammo to go to 500 or so. thanks for the info on the 75's.

but back to my original question. for plinking where can i get plain jane 5.56 in 62 grain FMJ. no special tips, just for plinking paper...

Thanks

I suspect you will have to load your own if you do not want the penetrator. Closest I can think of is the Sierra 63gr.

Ammunition really does not come much cheaper than the Federal XM855.

i have to say im kinda amazed there is no generic 62 gr 5.56 FMJ...

and the plan is to load my own just not there yet. and yes the its cheap! but i cant help but want to horde the good stuff for SHTF, and just shoot FMJ's for practice and tourneys...

as for the 75 grain match ammo can i run that thru a Pmag or is it to long?

The Russian Silver Bear 62gr. FMJ is steel cased but is accurate enough for plinking in my 1/9 twist barrel. Inexpensive too ($5-6 pre 20) at CTD and Sportsman's Guide and a few other sources. Never have had any problems with it.

PPU has regular and Match from 62 to 75.

My Colt is a 1/9 and shoots everything 5.56 just fine. If you are going for uber sub moa then you need a 1/7 barrel to shoot the heavier stuff more accurately. If you want battlefield accuracy then a 1/9 is fine for heavy stuff

i am looking for battle field accuracy out to 300 yards for now... would like to get to 5 or 600 though...

I don't know where anyone gets the idea a 1:9 twist can't handle a 62gr bullet? I have a Howa bolt action .223 rifle with a 1:12 twist and I can shoot a 62gr bullet. You can shoot most .223 bullet weights with a 1:9 twist. (Not all but most)

ive read that 75 is the limit for 1/9

62gr. Fmj

My local WM has 5.56 Lake City, 62 grain "green tip" AP ammo, on stripper clips and an ammo can containing 420 rounds. The price is $169.00 and it slots great out of my 1/9" Stag.

This ammo is produced at the LC arsenal by Federal, which currently has the contract.

yea thats all i can find... for the price i dont mind shooting it but my SHTF side says horde the green tip!

Winchester made a .223/5.56 62 grain FMJ load without the penetrator.

Load is: Winchester USA223R3

Some is still around but kind of hard to find.

1/9 is good for up to 69gr. After that it depends on the individual gun and what you want out of it. 1/9 will shoot heavy bullets just fine bit they will not be as stable so your groups will open up a bit but overall should still be within center mass. Now if your shooting for moa thats a different story.

My 1-9 shoots 69 SMK much better than 62 gr SS109s. The 62's are not built for accuracy, but to shoot through a Russian helmet at a prescribed range. I have successfully shot 69 SMKs out to 600 yards.

Good luck

Jerry
