My son (Age 44) swears by the benefits of the 5 hour enegry drinks as an engery booster. I was skeptical about it untill I heard a report on NPR about the dirnk & the man who develeped it. I only heard part of the report, but most of it seemed positive. It seems to be a very large dose of vitamin B-12 which on a previous thread about diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPR), They spoke to the the fact that B-12 seemed the help alleviate the pain.

Anyone here have any experience with this product, good or bad, or know of any independent studies on it.

I have always been impressed with the depth of knowledge on this forum. I seldom post, but read often. Art

i tried on once. i was working an 11pm to 7 am shift and had not slept well during the day. i bought one at the local gas station, the 5 hour energy brand to be exact. i drank it at about 10:30, hoping to have that energy boos that i needed to get through the night...wellllllllll...the energy boost hit at about 6:30 am and lasted only about and hour or so...but i did notice all night that my heart beat was up. i have not, nor would i ever take one again.

I use them once in a while have have had no negative effects. Of course I drink alot of coffe so I'm not overly sensitive to stimulants. I think they work well.

I carry a few of them in my duty bag. They work all right but not much better than a Coke and a Snickers (or a mocha frappa whatever). I will point out that they taste like cough medicine mixed with dirty toilet water.

I be thinking they are just another way to separate folks from their money!

I drink one a day, one a night actually, over the course of about 6 hours. I pour a little in a glass, then fill the glass with water and will add water to that glass a couple of times before I add a little more energy drink. I repeat that process and try to pour the last of the energy drink, left in the bottle, into my glass around 3 a.m., which is about 4 hours before bedtime.

I used to drink the 5 Hour brand but switched over to Stacker2 after I was told that I could get it at the local dollar store for a buck apiece. I find that it does the same thing and actually tastes a little better ta boot.

I know the stuff works for me. Last year, about this time, I had to make an emergency trip from Michigan down to Ft. Wood in Missouri. I had been up for 10 hr's before I started my 11 hr drive, by myself, and started off with a thermos of coffee, which I make strong, very strong.

For the 1st 4 hr's of my trip I was "struggling" on the coffee then switched to the energy drink, once again diluted in water. After a few minutes of the energy drink I felt alert and remained that way until arriving in MO by sippin' on my water / energy drink mix.

The other members of my family who live here used to tell me it's a gimmick, I wish they still felt that way. For the last 8 months or so I've been the sole supplier of the stuff around here and they all drink it. At first they drank it straight, now they've adopted my "slow meter" water method.

My middle daughter drinks WAY too many of them (Red Bull's, not the 5 Hour brand) - especially when she has to open the store after closing the previous night. Of course, I'm just her father, what do I know? Maybe it's because I refer to them as "Heart attack in a can"...

Now my sister does think the FRS brand is okay - says she's done due diligence on the ingredients. I still don't drink them.

I drank one of the Pomegranate 5 Hour shots for the first time this past Saturday. I had a small construction job to do Saturday afternoon and did didn't sleep so well Friday night. I wasn't really feeling like doing the project as I was tired by 1pm. I bought one of the drinks, drank it about 3pm. I didn't feel any burst of energy, but I definitely didn't feel tired anymore for the rest of the job.
I would try again

:) Where I worked the night shift went in on Sunday night and on Friday mourning we were off for the weekend. Well you can imagine how hard it was to get a nap on Sunday afternoon. I found out that I could take a couple of Midol tablets and make it through the night. Don

PS It kind of makes you feel different. :D

Which begs the question "How do you know what dirty toilet water tastes like???????
Everyone I've talked to says that stuff is bad JuJu-I leave it alone. If I need to stay up late-I ask one of the high schoolers in the neighborhood for a ritalin :D

I don't drink energy drinks at all. I am a diabetic. It gives a unwished boost to my sugerlevel. Beside that. If you drink to much of them it has a serious negative effect on your health.
I do know a young woman who is an adict on red bull. She suffers multiple healt problems. She has to stop with red bull very slowly.

There is a big difference between 5 Hour, which is just a massive dose of B12, and Red Bull and its kin which contain large amounts of caffeine.

I've tried them both, and actually prefer the flavored energy drinks. I drive a lot, hauling prisoners to ABQ by myself, and the stuff helps me stay alert.

When we travel to see our parents, about a 5 hour drive, we prefer to travel in the evening. I usually drink one on the way, but it doesn't really last 5 hours. In fact, I have no problem going to bed/sleep when we get there.

I drink a lot of coffee, so maybe that's why...I've never tried the Red Bull or other energy drinks.

Of any that I've tried I find the 5 hr to work the best without making me hyper. I rarely use them because like anything the more you use it the less it works but I keep a couple on hand for those times I need a little more energy. I'm a caffeine fiend so the only effect I get from them is a slight raise in gusto. I've seen people who don't drink much coffee or cafeinated soda get headaches and an elevated heart rate but those who are sensitive to stimulants can get that from a cup of coffee.

Um........... you may want to check your facts.
First, Unless you are vitamin B DEFICIENT, the extra Vit B ends up in the toilet... and does NOTHING for energy.

Next...a can of Coke has 35 milligrams of caffeine.

One can Of FIVE HOUR ENERGY brand has 180 Milligrams of caffeine. NO idea what the "extra strength " Five Hour Energy has.

One of the "other" has 200 milligrams of caffeine per can.

Taurine can lower blood pressure, and blood sugar, and also may act as a BLOOD THINNER so anyone on anti coagulants... well.... good luck to you also.... Taurine in these drinks can also be in a SYNTHETIC FORM, unlike Taurine found in food. ( so the effects of it may be exaggerated) There is no bennies to all this extra Taurine in these drinks, unless they bank on it helping you not have a heart attack or stroke. Drink UP!

Drink any one of those and all you are doing is drinking a full six pack of Coke in one drink. Good luck with your health.

A country that turns to drugs for everything.

Here's a novel idea. Tired? Sleep.

Can't be any worse than a big cup of caffine-enhanced Starbucks and a cigarette or two.

But since I don't smoke and can only handle 1-2 cups of coffee , I gave a few of them a try.

5-Hour Energy Drink- Berry flavor. Not bad tasting. They have given me an 'awakening' when I have a boring task and start falling asleep. No ill effects. Basically a big dose of Nutra-Sweet. The extra-strength seems better.

Monster Energy , and a few other brands I prefer to forget. No thanks! Too jittery , antzy , paranoid unpleasant feeling.

I have tried the 5 hr energy, not much to it. Taste like grape cough syrup yuck. I prefer amp in the green can. I work about 80 hours a week so caffine is a daily staple. Tea in the mornings, sip diet dr pepper til lunch, then more sweet tea, get one to go sip on that till going home then when home more sweet tea til 7 pm, next morning rinse and repeat. The green amp is the only thing that gives me any extra energy and I only drink them on occasion. Now that I look at all the caffine that I drink maybe I would be better off on meth and welfare. just kidding! Doeboy
